Black-Crowned Night Heron | Cypress Wetlands Port Royal, SC

We just returned from our annual family vacation to Florida, and of course I made sure to squeeze in plenty of bird photography along the way! My husband and I even headed out a few days early so I could explore some new spots on the drive down.

Our first stop was the incredible Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal, South Carolina. I’ve never seen so many nesting birds in one place. It was loud, smelly, and absolutely mesmerizing all at once. Everywhere you looked there were eggs, babies, juveniles, and adults from countless species, plus turtles sunning themselves and alligators bellowing in the background. It was a true wildlife spectacle.

I’m just beginning to sort through my images and can’t wait to share more, but for now I hope you enjoy this beautiful Black-Crowned Night Heron!

Foraging in shallow tidal waters among seaweed and ripples. These three images beautifully capture this bird’s active behavior, striding through the shallows, pausing to probe the soft bottom with its black bill, and navigating the coastal flat with quick, light steps.

Missing my coastal models a little extra today. Looking forward to an upcoming trip that will get me back out in the field.

Crested Caracara | The Celery Fields, FL | 2026

The Crested Caracara looks like a hawk with its sharp beak and talons, behaves like a vulture, and is technically a large tropical black-and-white falcon. Anyone see a toupee or is that just me?

Great Blue Heron | F.I.S.H. Preserve, FL | 2026

The GBH's cleaning process happens in two distinct stages, collectively called preening. First the GBH goes through the bathing stage. During this the heron dips, splashes, and shakes in the water to wash off dirt, fish slime, and dust. After bathing, the heron uses its beak and specialized "powder down" feathers to meticulously comb, oil, and align its plumage for waterproofing and insulation. I caught this guy during the bathing stage.

American Green Tree Frog | Clemmons, NC | 2025

The American green tree frog is a nocturnal, arboreal species found in the southeastern US, active at night and often found near water. They're primarily insectivorous, opportunistic feeders that eat a variety of small, live invertebrates in the wild, including moths, crickets, flies, beetles, mosquitoes, and ants.
