She was out for three months after surgery, away from the sport she loves. This was captured three days after being cleared with no restrictions.

The season is coming, and the clock is real. Every skill she had before the injury has to come back, one at a time. So she’s in the gym feeling it out, testing what her body remembers, rebuilding toward what it needs to become. 🤍

This season, our family has been living inside a comeback story. An injury, a surgery, months of rehab, and a kid who kept showing up when most would have walked away. The statistics say 70 percent of kids quit sports by age 13. Mine showed back up.

But the part nobody talks about is what the parents carry. The appointments. The questions. The research at midnight. The learning of rulebooks you never planned to read. Because here's what I've learned, nobody is coming to advocate for your child. That's the job. And nobody hands it to you. You just wake up one day and realize it's yours.

I wrote about all of it, the hard conversation, what the research says about young athletes and injury, and the quiet fight so many of us are fighting for our kids.

If you're a sports parent, or any parent carrying something heavy behind a steady face, this one is for you.

Happy birthday to my sweet friend, Tala! 🎂

Gymnastics brought us together, but God knew I needed you for so much more than the gym. You hopped on a plane and celebrated me in Mexico. You have been a voice of reason, a safe place, and a friend who pours into me without ever being asked. Not everyone gets a friend like that, and I do not take it for granted.

Throwing it back to her birthday shoot from a couple of years ago, because some moments are too good not to revisit.

Tala, I pray this next year is everything you have dreamed of and more. You deserve every good thing coming your way.

I love you, sis. Happy birthday! 🥂✨

Not Pinterest. Mine. Most of you know me from the gym floor, but the camera goes everywhere. 🤍

Happy birthday, baby sis. Jasmine Davis

You are the best TT my kids could ask for and the kind of sister who shows up every single time. Loyal, loving, and all in for the people you call yours.

Daddy would be so proud of the woman you are. I know I am. Praying this next trip around the sun brings you every blessing you’ve been believing for and a few you didn’t even see coming.

Love you always 🤍

Nobody tells you that grief turns you into a scholar.

Today is my daddy's birthday. Four years without him, and I can tell you exactly how he held a coffee cup, the rhythm of his footsteps, the half-second pause he took before every punchline of a story he had told four hundred times.

Here is the part that stops me cold. I never noticed that pause while he was alive. I learned it afterward, from memory, cramming for an exam after the class had ended.

But in our family, you do not skip a birthday. That was his law. So tonight we will light a candle, sing to him, pull out the old polaroids, and tell his jokes until we are laughing and crying at the same table.

The new piece is about grief's classroom. The brutal half, the tuition is everything. The brilliant half, the lesson is transferable to the people still here. If you have a voicemail you cannot play and cannot delete, this one is for you.

Yesterday morning I sent three kids back into the world. A sophomore, a seventh grader, and a first grader.

Nobody warns you about the math you start doing in the driveway. Three more first days with my oldest. That is it. Three. Six with my middle. Eleven with my baby. The number only ever gets smaller.

The new Substack piece is about the years nobody celebrates. Seventh grade. Tenth grade. The in between years with no graduation and no first anything, where all the real growing up quietly happens. It is about raising kids who are ready to leave the nest, even when the nest is not ready. And it is about the one thing I want every parent to do differently this year: hand someone the camera and get in the frame. Your kids need proof you were there too.

While I was writing it, a cardinal landed in the tree across the street. If you have followed our family's story, you already know what that means to us.

Six years old and already knows exactly who she is.

This whole studio setup happened in a garage. Backdrop stand between the storage bins, seamless taped to the concrete, and a little stool waiting for the birthday girl. Because you don’t need a fancy studio to make portraits that matter. You need good light, a plan, and a kid who’s ready to shine.

Happy 6th birthday, Luna. 🎂🎉

Thank you for bringing your whole personality to that gray paper, Pandy Paws included. TT Tiff loves you! 🤍

I tell people all the time that I do not do posed studio sessions. I photograph real life as it happens. But last month, while my niece was in town, I taped a gray paper backdrop to my garage floor, set a wooden stool on it, and made portraits.

She turns six this Saturday. And six is a threshold. It is one of the last years you can catch the baby face and the big kid face in the same photograph.

The new Substack piece is about why I made the exception, and why the garage never mattered. In twenty years my sister will not see the storage bins. She will see her daughter at six, mid grin, holding that cat.
