Years back I asked a few friends to dig out family recipes, then to tell me about the history and meaning of those recipes while we cooked them together. Okay...my friends cooked, and I photographed. Anyway, that series was called "The Legacy Project" (super sexy title, I know).
For a few reasons, I haven't photographed one of these sessions in a few years. But the initial inspiration for that project - a desire to help bridge generational gaps in the kitchen, and preserve family legacies through food - has continued to tug at me, so this summer I re-envisioned things to focus more on the relationships and the histories than on the food.
This story is of my friend Kathleen, making a simple fava bean dish that can make its way into just about any type of gathering, with her aunt Ani, and daughter Violet:
Photos and a family recipe from an afternoon in the kitchen with a friend, her aunt (and family matriarch), and her daughter.
