One of my favorite summer residents is the Willow Flycatcher. These small insect hunters spend much of their time perched in willow thickets, darting out to catch flying insects before returning to the same perch. Their distinctive “fitz-bew” call is a familiar sound along the shoreline each summer.

Eastern Kingbirds are hard at work!

Today I watched a pair of Eastern Kingbirds gathering nesting material and building their nest in a Russian Olive tree. Part of the material got caught on a branch and it took several minutes of pulling and tugging to finally get it loose. They weren’t just busy builders—they were also fearless defenders. At one point, they teamed up to drive off an American Robin that appeared interested in taking over the nest site.

A walk through a small wooded area turned into a morning full of surprises. A striking male Spotted Towhee flashed those brilliant red eyes, Black-capped Chickadees busily gathered seeds, and a Common Yellowthroat briefly emerged from the cover for a quick portrait.

We arrived just after this osprey had successfully caught a fish. Over the next hour and a half, we watched it perch, reposition, and eventually fly to a favorite snag with its meal.
