Orange Colored Sky
Baltimore Oriole Male
Polk County Iowa USA
May 2026

I was walking along, minding my business
When out of an orange colored sky
(Flash, bam, alakazam)
Wonderful you came by

I was humming a tune, drinking in sunshine
When out of that orange colored view
(Flash, bam, alakazam)
I got a look at you
~ Nat King Cole

They’re back! The Baltimore orioles are visiting the feeders and perching in the trees and nibbling on anything sweet. They truly are glorious with their vibrant orange and white feathers. It’s also fun when I spot one of their little woven hanging nests.

Welcome to a new weekly theme. I am excited by this week’s theme. Every bull featured will be a 3x3 (three brow tines each side).
At first thought you may say, that’s so easy, there’s all kinds of them around. But let me just say this. I had to look very carefully to find the 5th one to finish out the five day stretch. Before getting to today’s 3x3, it’s worth mentioning, here in South Central Alaska, 2x2 bulls are common, even 3x2 or 2x3 is relatively common….but 3x3, not so much. Some of you may remember Turkey in 2022, he was a 3x5, meaning three tines on the right, and five on the left. Even a giant guy like 23, look at any photo of him, he is usually 3 one side, and 2 the other.
2021 Grumpy! As majestic as he was, this was the only year he was 3x3. I’ll never forget how excited I was the day this photo was captured, it was the first day seeing him that season and the first thing I noticed was those 3x3’s and he was also a solid 10 inches wider in spread than usual.
It is so special to look back on these moments. Buckly up for this week’s theme. Thanks for being with us. Four more 3x3’s the next four photo days.

One of the lovely lady Northern Cardinals at the local park. She is not as bold as the Queen of the Boardwalk but she will come quite close to the nature trail.

That birdhouse has been up for years and nobody's moved in. You're starting to wonder if you did something wrong. 🏠

Here's the thing — most birdhouse problems aren't about the house. They're about where it is, which direction it faces, how high it's mounted, and what's nearby.

The fixes are simple once you know what to look for. Everything's in the comments.

April is moving fast, and so are the birds. 🌿 Right now, waves of migrants are pushing north and some of the most spectacular species of the year are going to be passing through your yard in the next few weeks. Baltimore Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Ruby-crowned Kinglets — these aren't birds you have to drive somewhere to see. Get your feeders cleaned, your water fresh, and your eyes up.
