Sunset in the Elk Mountains

A few days ago, I was camping near Crested Butte, checking on the early wildflowers and spending some quiet time in the backcountry with Apollo. One evening, the mountains put on an incredible show, as the last light of the day cut through an evening rainstorm and lit up the landscape with color.

I still have so many moments from that quick trip waiting to be processed, but even now, it already feels like one of those weekends that stays with you for a while.

Roads Above the Treeline

Both Cottonwood Pass and Independence Pass are scheduled to open tomorrow, as usual, on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend.

They are not only much-needed shortcuts, but also some of the most scenic drives in Colorado.

As always, be mindful, especially if you are not familiar with switchbacks, narrow roads, tight shoulders, and the possibility of ice.

The views are incredible, but keep your eyes on the road.

Have fun, be safe, and Leave No Trace.

Stairway to Heaven

A long-overdue visit to this classic of the Rampart Range, just a few miles from Sedalia.

This hike offers impressive vistas around every corner, even before reaching the iconic red stairs. From there, the trail climbs so steeply it feels like it’s reaching for the sky.

The cherry on top was watching the sunrise unfold in a stunning display of color, in complete solitude.

Highlights & Recommendations:

🥾 3 miles RT
🧻 Restrooms available at the TH
🐕‍🦺 Dog friendly except for the last segment. The stairs are very steep and might affect your dog’s paws
📸 Scenic vistas on every corner
🧊 Since the trial is located on the north side, it is common to find patches of ice on trail. Micro-spikes are recommended
⚡️The area has a lot of lightning activity. Plan ahead. If an electric storm comes, descend immediately
🍃 Leave no trace (including leaving poopy bags along the trail)

Looking out at the Grenadiers

There’s something about these mountains that always pulls me in. But one section in particular stands above the rest: the Grenadier Range. Remote, sculpted, and almost unreal.

A Window to the Falls

One of my favorite hikes, just a few miles from Breckenridge, has a bit of everything: rock scrambling, creek crossings, abandoned cabins, and sweeping views of the Continental Divide.

Tucked into a quiet corner of the forest, this waterfall feels like stepping into a different world.

From here, the trail follows the creek as it cascades over rocks, eventually reaching three alpine lakes nestled high among the peaks of the Tenmile Range, which is another adventure on its own.

Raging Colors at the Garden

Whenever a good sunset is in the forecast, my go-to spot in the Springs is Garden of the Gods. The mix of jagged red rocks, lingering patches of snow, and vibrant skies is hard to beat.

And with longer days come longer sunsets, like this one from a couple of days ago. It lasted long enough that I could switch locations without hesitation.
