Kayla & Colton’s overlanding elopement in the San Juan Mountains was truly epic. We spent the entire day soaking in beautiful mountain views as we traversed some of the best off-roading trails in the whole world!

The day began with an early morning on a dirt road that led to stunning views. Kayla & Colton got ready by their truck before sharing an incredibly sweet first look. We had a slow morning, wandering around the trails and taking in the views. (And wrapped up with 10/10 breakfast burritos on the tailgate.)

After a little break to take a nap, put on press-on nails, air down tires, and get more caffeine… we were off on our big adventure. We spent the rest of the day off-roading over multiple mountain passes with stops along the way at epic views, ghost towns, and alpine lakes.

As the day went on, the clouds started rolling in. We took advantage of a break in rain for Kayla & Colton to share vows and say I do! Literally right as we got back to the cars, rain started pouring down. We decided to call it for the evening, and meet up the next day for a bit instead of waiting to see if the sky would clear back up. So the next day we set out again, on a different dirt road, to go to the most stunning waterfall. I love how something completely off plan ended up being an absolute highlight!

I think adventuring with your partner is pretty much the coolest way to get married. And if you agree, I’d love to help you plan your elopement – whether it’s off-roading, or some other incredibly fun adventure!

Crested Butte, Colorado is an ✨ elopement hidden gem ✨ 

This off-the-beaten path mountain town is known for it’s epic wildflower fields and miles of trails for off-roading, hiking, and mountain biking. Making it absolutely perfect for adventurous elopement days!

Crested Butte has every view you could dream up- mountains, waterfalls, rivers, alpine lakes, wildflowers… AND you can get it all in one day. With the conveniences of town never far away.

I’ve been lucky enough to capture some incredible elopements in Crested Butte this year, and I can’t wait for more. If Crested Butte sounds like your vibe, I’d love to chat!

Are you hoping to elope sometime in 2027, but not sure exactly where – just that you want a fun and adventurous day?

Sometimes it can help to narrow things down by thinking about *when* you want to elope, and which locations have the best weather + conditions for adventuring at that time of year!

Here are some ideas (from an adventure elopement photographer) for the places I’m most excited to capture elopements each month next year:

January - Death Valley: colorful desert sunsets and winter temps in the 70s

February - Colorado ski towns: incredible ski/snowboarding, sleigh rides, and cozy winter vibes in the mountains

March - Garden of the Gods: snowy adventures around the unique red rock formations

April - Moab, Utah: exploring national parks like Arches and Canyonlands

May - Grand Teton National Park: huge mountain views and activities like canoeing, hiking, and gondola rides

June - Crested Butte, Colorado: wildflower meadows and epic off-roading trails

July - San Juan Mountains: peak wildflower blooms and Milky Way viewing

August - Breckenridge, Colorado: sailboating on a mountain lake or hiking through the Rockies

September - Ouray, Colorado: best spot to see insane fall colors in Colorado

October - Zion National Park: camping and off-roading around Moab’s red rock canyons

November - Colorado Springs, Colorado: your choice of red rocks, mountain views, and/or cozy cabin vibes

December - Leadville, Colorado: the Colorado mountain town no one knows about, but everyone should! Skiing, cozy cabins, incredible views. Everything you need!

Yesterday morning, I got to capture an absolutely stunning Garden of the Gods elopement!

I met up with Mikele & Brandon before first light to start their elopement with sunrise portraits at High Point Overlook. After the sun came up, we wandered the park a bit, taking some couple’s photos and soaking in the gorgeous morning light.

Then we met up with M&B’s family for an intimate ceremony at the Three Graces, officiated by the bride’s dad. The couple shared vows (that had everyone giggling and tearing up) and sealed their marriage with a kiss. After the ceremony, we took lots of beautiful family portraits!

One great thing about eloping with just a few loved ones is that you can include time for photos of all your guests! Weddings are often one of the only times all your loved ones are in the same place (and dressed up), so I love getting to capture some individuals and group portraits of everyone.

Garden of the Gods is truly the perfect venue for an elopement or microwedding because it’s so pretty year-round! I’ve gotten to see every kind of weather there from snowy to foggy to sunny, and I promise this is a spot that is stunning no matter what. Every season, sunrise or sunset!

The Tetons are just the most epic place to go get hitched. There’s SO much to go do, so much to go see. You can hike, bike, boat, take a gondola, grab Cowboy Coffee or a Corbet’s Cabin waffle. Go search for wildlife. See sunrise light up the mountains and sunset create beams through the canyons. It’s stunning.

Last fall, I shot one of the craziest elopements of my career – a multi-day, multi-country elopement in Northern Ireland and Iceland.

H+Z spent three days exploring ancient castles in Northern Ireland and glaciers in Iceland. Even when our itinerary changed a bit last-minute because of a (literally record-setting) snowstorm, we packed so much adventuring into H+Z’s elopement, including…

• A first look at a quaint countryside cottage
• Lots of portraits at Northern Ireland’s stunning Dark Hedges
• Visiting the ruins of a 1,600-year-old castle on the cliffs
• A ceremony on a farm overlooking another historic castle
• An adventure through a snowfield to an insane ice cave
• Getting offered several celebratory shots of liquor by locals (in both countries)
• Portraits at a glacier lagoon (where we all got soaked by a wave)
• Running dramatically down a black sand beach
• A hike to a waterfall (and finally, some gorgeous sunlight)
• …and at least five coffee shop visits

Death Valley isn’t on most couples’ radars as an elopement destination – but it absolutely should be!

Death Valley is an insane landscape. It looks like another planet – and it’s surprisingly colorful (in fact, one iconic part of the national park is called the Artists Palette). The cool rock formations, glowing sunsets, salt flats, and mountain views are all incredible and unique elopement backdrops.
But one of the best things about eloping in Death Valley is that it’s super private! Breakfast Canyon in the part of the national park where wedding ceremonies are held, and it’s actually not open to the public! And after your ceremony, you can explore and take photos at all the coolest spots in the park.

Of course, if you’ve heard anything about Death Valley, you know that it’s HOT – so the best season to elope there is between December and February, when highs are typically in the 70s. It’s a great choice if you want an adventurous winter elopement without snow!
