The Great Sand Dunes National Park is truly magical ๐Ÿช„๐Ÿง™

They are the tallest sand dunes in North America, reaching ~750 ft, shaped by opposing wind directions and seasonal flow from Medano Creek ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

Brought my lil Wizard from LEGO set 6020 (Magic Shop) which is a classic Castle-era minifig, I thought it would be fun to throw in a little new age Harry Potter accessory as well ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฐ

Yet again I found a little ladybug to capture acute shot at one of my favorite places, also sweep to see you me and my pups ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฅพ

Even in this dune environment, insects are highly adapted where many beetles use a waxy cuticle to limit water loss, stay active during cooler periods, and burrow into sand where surface temps can exceed ~140ยฐF ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿž

Ladybugs are predators that feed on aphids and other small insects, helping protect dune vegetation and maintain plant stability in an ecosystem with limited water and nutrients ๐Ÿœ๐ŸŒฑ

Koala Suit Fan from LEGO Minifigures Series 28 finding a big prick outside the Great Sand Dunes National Park ๐Ÿจ๐ŸŒต

I took this shot on a beautiful trail along the outer edge of the dunes and found both live and dead cactus partially buried in the sand ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿœ๏ธ

Cacti in dune systems survive by storing water in thick tissues and using shallow, widespread roots that rapidly absorb moisture from brief rain. Most use CAM photosynthesis, opening stomata at night to limit water loss in extreme heat ๐ŸŒง๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

Cacti also help stabilize loose sand, reduce erosion, and provide habitat and food for insects, birds, and small mammals in this harsh environment ๐Ÿชฒ๐Ÿฆ‚๐Ÿ‡

Minifig Meditation in southern Colorado ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Threw this minifig together from build-a-fig parts at Bricks & Minifigs in Centennial, Colorado and brought it along for a weekend camping trip near the Sangre de Cristo mountains ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐Ÿ“

Found this cool little quartz bit that seemed like the perfect crystal for this witchy, meditation girly ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿชจ

Cool rock fact: quartz is silicon dioxide and makes up a large portion of Earthโ€™s crust that can generate a small electric charge under pressure, which is why itโ€™s used in watches and electronics ๐Ÿ“ฒ๐ŸŒŽ

Near Fort Garland, quartz commonly forms in veins when hot, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids move through fractures in the rock during mountain building. As pressure and temperature drop, the dissolved silica crystallizes into quartz and over time weathering breaks down the surrounding rock, leaving resistant quartz pieces exposed at the surface like this ๐ŸŒ‹๐Ÿ—ป

Do you agree that droids would be snowboarders and clones would be skiers? ๐Ÿค”โ„๏ธ

Grabbed these ski and snowboard accessories from Bricks and Minifigs in Centennial for this winter setup ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Also picked up these Citizen Brick beer cans that are pretty great for any photoshoot ๐Ÿป

Took these photos on Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park last month๐Ÿ“

Fun fact: Bear Lake sits at ~9,475 ft and is somewhat shallow for an alpine lake, maxing out around 30 feet deep. It was carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, which is why it has a more broad, bowl-shaped basin ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿ“

In the winter, under the ice, cold-water species like trout, small aquatic insects, and zooplankton can stay active in near-freezing water by slowing their metabolism and using natural antifreeze proteins โ„๏ธ

Snagged these Lego snowshoes from Bricks and Minifigs in Centennial, Colorado ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”ฅ

Crampons (the spikes on my boots) were definitely necessary for this shot and hike... Swipe to see me out on this frozen lake for this adventure ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿ˜

Crampons are super helpful for moving across ice or firm snowpack on winter trails, definitely saw a few people on this hike busting their a** without these spikes ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Fun fact: early versions of crampons date back to around the early 1900s in European mountaineering when climbers in the Alps started using metal spikes strapped to their boots to move more efficiently on ice ๐Ÿ—ป๐Ÿฅถ

Now a fun mountain fact: Dream Lake, sitting around 9,900 ft in RMNP, regularly freezes thick enough in winter to support foot travel where alpine lake ice usually reaches around 12 inches or more during sustained cold periods, which is generally considered sufficient to support a person although this year i was questioning the stability with our uncharacteristic winter weather pattern serial in Colorado ๐Ÿ˜’๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

After taking a Lego Masters mosaic class at a few months ago I've started loving playing around with these mosaic patterns ๐Ÿคช๐ŸŽจ

I found some inspiration on Pinterest and instagram from and .on.monday who have some amazing designs! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

So I thought I would join the mosaics on Monday thread to share some ideas ๐Ÿ˜Š

This baddie Crocodile minifig found a beautiful but toxic and invasive plant of the Colorado front range ๐ŸŠโ˜ข๏ธ

I love this crocodile from LEGO Minifigures Series 28 (71051) and found this weird plant along the Parmalee Trail at Mount Falcon park that seemed fitting ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

At first these looked like little succulents or tiny green roses, but theyโ€™re actually Euphorbia myrsinites (aka Myrtle spurge). The leaves spiral tightly around the stem, which gives that stacked look ๐Ÿชท๐Ÿชด

I did realize afterwards when I looked this plant up that it might've not been the best idea to get this close... oops ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Myrtle spurge is a state-listed noxious w**d in Colorado, which means landowners are actually required to control or remove it because it spreads aggressively on dry hillsides like this and outcompetes native plants ๐ŸŒฑ โš ๏ธ

It also produces a milky latex sap that can cause pretty serious skin irritation, and if it gets in your eyes it can lead to temporary blindness and significant inflammation ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿฅด

Why do beautiful plants and animals in nature always have to be so toxic?? ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒพ

Hoth Rebel out for a winter hike in Rocky Mountain National Park ๐Ÿž๏ธ โ„๏ธ

Took this minifig from LEGO set 7130 up to Emerald Lake and laid in the snow for this shot bc the basin is beautiful this time of year ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“ธ

Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado sits around 10,100 ft and the cirque kind of traps cold air and limits sun, so the lake stays frozen and snow sticks around way longer than youโ€™d expect. Nights up here can still drop well below 0ยฐF with wind moving through ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ’จ

However, this March there has been some record warm days across Colorado. This kind of heat speeds up snowmelt earlier than normal which can mess with how long snowpack sticks around and when runoff hits later in the year, having serious implications for the summer fire season and increases drought risk for the front range ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒก๏ธ

At least Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back didn't have to experience global warming ๐Ÿ˜’
