Stop 9 and 10 on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive of Sleeping Bear Dunes was stunning. You can see the lingering rain clouds obscuring the top of the next dunes. Mother nature does it best. Enjoy the scenery around you and get your toes sandy. Spend some time outdoors, your mental health will thank you.

At Sleeping Bear Dunes Scenic Drive Stop #9, The Overlook, there are signs that ask you to please not climb down the dunes due to safety and erosion. Then it says if you must go down, take sunscreen, water and snacks, AND if you cannot make the 450 ft climb back up the very steep dune, it make cost you roughly $3000 dollars and your pride to be rescued. From the top, you cannot see the bottom, only if you go down the dunes a bit will you see what looks like tiny colorful ants milling about on the shore below. We found the views from the top to be breathtaking enough. More photos to come.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Stop #3 on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The Dune Overlook has a very large platform that allows for almost a 360 degree view. When we arrived a lovely bus tour group were listening to their tour guide. On the left of the platform were cottonwood trees that led down to sand dunes. Beyond is Lake Michigan and Pyramid Point. As you scan to the right, the dunes very quickly give way to a small lake and a spectacular old homestead surrounded by fields and trees. The perfect example of dune succession.

The night before we made it to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park we were hammered with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Having weathered a severe set of storms in the UP a couple of years ago, we considered leaving before the storms arrived, which would have meant driving into the early morning to get home. But we really wanted to see the dunes, so we stayed. We got up early and during a lull in the heavy rain, we packed up our wet tent and headed south.

We weren't sure if the clouds would clear out by the time we made it there or not. But, about 20 minutes before we reached the scenic drive entrance, the sky started to clear and we were treated to some spectacular views.

The Pierce Stocking Scenic drive is worth every bit of the $25 all-day pass to the entire national lakeshore. The first overlook on the scenic drive is the Glen Lake Overlook. Thousands of years ago Glen Lake was a harbor of Lake Michigan until enough sediment was deposited to cut off the harbor and create the lake. Now the town of Glen Arbor sits atop that sediment with Lake Michigan on one side and Glen Lake on the other. The lake is known for it's beautiful blue color that is a result of the sandy bottom and natural springs that feed the lake. The next stop was the Dune Overlook.

Two different dune trails. The first, a small trek through the woods, up 75 steps and 173 ft elevation gain to see a tree-framed view of the lake. The second, a sandy trail down to beach. Both very close together at Petoskey State Park, MI.

After visiting a local shop selling Petoskey stones, we decided it would be worth our time to collect our own. We stopped at this rocky beach and spent a couple of hours dipping stones in water and collected a few Petoskey stones and other lovely rocks. It was an enjoyable and relaxing adventure. Sometimes just slowing down and focusing on what is right in front of you is just what you need.

The Milkweed Cafe was open and their monarch caterpillar customers were dining on their favorite dish. Right next door was crown vetch with a view of the lake. Five out of five stars. Would go again.

Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 did not disappoint this morning as it made a surprise stop where we were to show off and let us all get a better look. What an amazing display!
