Bull bison wallowing 🦬

Wallowing is when bison create shallow depressions in the ground by rolling and bathing in dust or mud. It helps them to cool off, shed fur, and deter insects.

5 interesting facts I learned about Bison while visiting the CSKT Bison Range 🦬 :

1. Bison can run up to 35 miles per hour & are extremely agile
2. Bulls & Cows have horns that can grow up to 2 feet long
3. The large hump on a Bison's back is caused by the structure of their vertebrae. It is crucial for supporting their large heads
4. The muscles attached to their vertebrae play a role in thermoregulation (helps them maintain their body temperature in extreme weather conditions). Heat is generated through the movement and muscle activity
5. Bison live in structured herds with female-led groups and seperate male groups that join during mating season

Incredible animals, Incredible place.

CSKT Bison Range does an amazing job highlighting the importance of bison conservation, the history of the range, and the cultural heritage of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
