I had a great time shooting this tournament. I drove nearly 12 hours round trip, shot 6000+ images, and edited over 1200 photos. Ya girl is TIRED, but in the best way. I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Competing at the IBJJF Chicago Open this weekend?

I'm offering photo coverage for a limited number of competitors. I offer easy and convenient online booking so you can reserve coverage ahead of time, choose your photo package, and handle everything all in one place. No second guessing or worrying about chasing me down at the venue. (Though you totally can if you want, I can book sessions in person if you're still on the fence).

Spots are limited so I can give each athlete the focus they deserve throughout the day.

Back in October, I had the absolute joy of photographing this beautiful couple's engagement session. And here we are, at the beginning of March, and I'm just now sharing it.

Why the delay? Well, partially because life gets busy... But also:

I very intentionally don't post sneak peeks for emotional milestones. I let my clients have time to share (or not share) their moments first and in their own time.

Is it the best marketing strategy? Probably not, but my priority isn't marketing and social media urgency. I'm focused on providing an excellent service to my clients and giving them room to shine.

So if you see me posting something way after it happened, I promise it's not because I'm not excited. It's just that YOUR experience matters to me more than my feed. And if you're someone who values privacy, I offer a full "opt-out" option if you don't want me to ever share your images.

Now that they've had their moment, I'm so excited to share these with all of you. ✨

Volume on for this one! (Plz, I worked so hard on the sound design).

Photos of jiu-jitsu are cool, but.... they don't capture the essence of a comp day like video does.

I made this at the FUJI BJJ Kansas City Expo following professor Trey Carter of Dynasty Jiu-Jitsu, documenting the journey of him and his team throughout the tournament.

Jiu-jitsu is what got me into video making in the first place, and I still feel lucky to help give these moments a platform.

Senior session at Capen Park | Oct 2025

I'm not a senior photographer, but I make exceptions for awesome kids. Avery wanted to incorporate her love for reading, nature, and jiu-jitsu into her session. No problem!

We started our session at Capen Park for the nature part and narrowly finished as a severe thunderstorm was rolling in. We were up on the bluffs when an unexpected gust of wind almost took my flash off the side of a cliff. I caught it mid-air, no worries 😎.

Then scheduled part two at our favorite jiu-jitsu gym. It was a great session and I'm really happy with how these turned out.

Tips for new BJJ photographers:

1. Don't just shoot the action.
Action shots are awesome, but it's only one piece of the day. Aim to capture the environment, reactions, and the little moments in between.

2. Composition, crops, and framing matter more than you think.
Awkward crops and faceless action shots should be avoided. Experiment with different camera angles and framing for stronger images.

3. Get your reps in.
Sports photography is hard. Indoor, low light sports photography is even harder. You're going to take SO MANY bad pictures. It's part of the process and you'll get better with practice. That might sound obvious, but it's good to be reminded occasionally.

Have other bjj photography questions? Lmk! I'm happy to help.
