THROWBACK THURSDAY ⏮️

Pictured here are SCDOT’s first SHEP employees! The State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP) was created 30 years ago to provide South Carolina drivers with free roadside assistance in an emergency.

In the last three decades, SHEP team members have helped hundreds of thousands of drivers. If you need help on the road, dial *HP (*47)! 👷‍♂️

Crews have placed new bridge spans for the bridge replacement project happening on Pace Bridge Road in Greenville County. This bridge, crossing the South Saluda River, is being replaced as part of Bridge Package 19 and the SCDOT Closed and Load Restricted Program.

Right now, crews are replacing the previous structure with stronger materials and are raising the bridge by 3 feet to make sure this bridge is sturdy for years to come. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

🌀 Hurricane season is here. Preparation starts before the storm arrives. 🌧️

At SCDOT, our teams are preparing by staging equipment, reviewing response plans, and making sure resources are ready to help keep South Carolina’s roads safe and accessible.

Take time now to make a plan, gather emergency supplies, know your evacuation routes, and stay informed before severe weather threatens.

During and after a storm, remember to use caution on the roads, never drive through flooded areas, and give our crews space to safely clear debris and make repairs.

Prepare today. Stay safe tomorrow. Download the guide: https://scemd.org/stay-informed/publications/hurricane-guide/

SCDOT contractors are making progress in Calhoun County, working in the median and along the shoulders of I-26 as we work to widen the interstate between Charleston and Columbia.

If you’re driving through these work zones, slow down, pay attention and keep these crews safe! 🦺👍

🚧 Safety upgrades are underway along 6.3 miles of US 521 near Rembert to prevent run-off-the-road crashes and save lives. 🚧

To protect the 7,700 daily drivers on this corridor, crews are implementing targeted engineering solutions, including shoulder improvements and brighter pavement markings.

This project is expected to wrap up by early Summer 2027.

🚧 Crews have been working on a 2-mile road diet project on US 76 stretching from North Main Street to Bleckley Street in Anderson County. 🚧

The project goes around Linley Park, which sees cars, bikes, and pedestrians every day. 🚗🚴🚶

In order to make these streets safer for everyone, SCDOT traffic engineers developed a new roadway design: less room for cars and more room for cyclists and pedestrians.

The final touches on the project are expected to be in place by August.

Reminder: The bridge on Dutch Fork Road (US 76) in Irmo will temporarily close for repairs starting today.

Crews have been sandblasting and working underneath the bridge to repair concrete and steel elements. This closure is needed in order to make critical repairs that require no traffic on the bridge.

The bridge will be closed until the end of July, with repairs scheduled to continue after it reopens. The final bridge deck will have a smooth, new riding surface and new expansion joints to protect it for years to come.

Please give our crews enough space to work and safely complete these repairs. For more information, visit the project website: https://projectportal.scdot.org/D1P1
