This one is easy...

You have one job: raise an incredible young man.

Nail Gunn....

Well, that was too easy.

Job two: send him out into the world to do good.

Job done.

Now comes the hard part...

Watching him practice agency. Watching him serve his country. Watching him see the world, find his own way, make his own choices—and run.

Run toward the life he’s building for himself.

raised him to have roots strong enough to know where home is and wings strong enough to leave it.

Turns out, raising him was never the hardest part.

It’s watching him become exactly who Lindsey raised him to be... and being brave enough to let him go.

There are some Family Days where you can feel the love before you ever lift the camera.

Fabiola came to Fort Jackson to tap out her 17-year-old daughter, Kimberly, and girlfriend… she brought the FAMILY. The hugs. The kisses. The excitement. Everybody waiting to finally get their hands on their girl again.

And then there was Mom.

Fabiola and I worked our way through my English, her Spanish, my written Spanish, a little pointing, a lot of smiling, and somehow we understood each other just fine. Because some things really don't need much translation.

A mama seeing her daughter after Basic Training is one of them.

Kimberly is only 17, absolutely gorgeous — yes, long eyelashes and all — and already stepping into such a big chapter of her life. Now she’s headed back home to Utah to finish her senior year of high school.

Seventeen years old. Basic Training behind her. Senior year ahead of her.

That is one heck of a story already.

Getting to stand in the middle of this family and document the hugs, the pride, the laughter, and all those little moments in between was such a beautiful experience.

Fabiola, gracias por confiar en mí para contar un pedacito de la historia de tu familia. It was truly a pleasure.

BRAVO, SECOND PLATOON!

Ella is finally DONE.

I repeat... girlfriend is DONE. 😂

And then came the family.

Kari had to do a double back because one hug apparently wasn't enough. She hugged Ella, tried to pull herself together, stepped away... and went right back in.

The tears did NOT stop.

But it wasn't just Kari.

Everywhere I turned there was another hug. Someone else wiping their face. Someone reaching for Ella. Someone standing back just watching her. Everybody had been waiting for this moment in their own way, and once she was finally standing there with them, it all came out.

So. Much. Love. In. One. Space.

And THIS is the part I love.

Of course I want the photograph of Ella standing there in uniform. She worked hard for that photograph.

But give me everything happening around it, too.

Give me Mom going back for the second hug. Give me the family holding onto her. Give me the hands. The tears. The people watching quietly from behind. The moments nobody realizes I'm photographing.

Because years from now, Ella will know what she accomplished when she looks at these photographs.

But she'll also be able to see exactly how loved she was while she was doing it.

Now... onto Ella's next adventure. 🤍
