Shuttering Thru Life - Travis Batton Living Life One Frame at a Time! Hello! Thank you for taking the time to visit my site. This love affair has evolved over time. I’m a traditional kind of guy.

I wish I could say that I have been passionately involved in photography since I was a kid, but my love affair with photography occurred a little later in life. While I have taken pictures most of my life, I never really put much thought into them. I started out worrying about what gear to use and how this name brand compared to that name brand. I believe I was more worried about the gear than kno

wing how to make a proper exposure. As my knowledge grew, I began to figure out that the fundamentals of photography applied to all cameras regardless of the name on the strap. I also realized that I did not need all the extra features that are constantly pushed on the consumer to get you to buy a particular camera. Furthermore, I realized that the camera was just a tool and my ability to use this tool is really what makes the difference. Thus, I really love traditional photography. I love it so much that I started shooting film. Little did I know, shooting film would transform my entire approach to photography. Not only has film taught me more about photography, it has slowed me down. I am more engaged and I tend to shoot more with a purpose. The icing on the cake is that the look of film adds character and depth to each image that just can’t be duplicated by the digital medium. Hence, you will find more and more film images on my site. I tend to gravitate toward landscapes, cityscapes and the urban scene. I really love street photography in the traditional sense of candid moments that tell the story of the human condition. This is not to say that I won’t pass up a nice sunset or the local wildlife. I would really appreciate any comments or thoughts on my photographs and blog posts. I should add that my wife is writer and occasionally will post her insights as well. So thanks again for stopping by and please return as I am always updating my portfolio and blogging about my photography endeavors.

An Unexpected Cajun Treasure

One of the greatest joys of photography is stumbling across hidden gems when you least expect them. The other day while scouting locations for an upcoming video project, I came across a quaint little storefront that stood out like a neon sign in a blackout. The vibrant colors were impossible to ignore—they were practically begging to be photographed.

I started with a wide shot of the storefront before moving in to capture the details. Every display had its own character, including a weathered bench painted to resemble Old Glory. The bold colors, strings of beads, and eclectic décor immediately gave me New Orleans vibes.

Then I spotted the Bourbon Street sign. A closer look at the storefront revealed the name: Joie's Cajun Market. Suddenly, everything made sense.

After doing a little research, I discovered that Joie's Cajun Market isn't just a colorful roadside stop—it's also known as a great place to eat. What an unexpected find, tucked away off the beaten path.

Moments like this are exactly why I love exploring the back roads. You never know what you'll discover around the next bend. And judging by what I found, I may have just picked the destination for my next date night with my wife.

Stay tuned! I have one more shot from this location, I think you will like.

Sometimes the Best Shots Are Unexpected

I noticed the sky starting to put on a pretty cool show while I was driving through Columbia. I was out scouting a few locations for an upcoming video project. I really like this shot, but it's actually not the best thing I photographed on my quick recon trip. I'll be sharing that one soon, so stay tuned!

Rediscovering Familiar Places

I have a list of projects I could be working on, but over the last couple of days I just couldn't find the motivation to tackle any of them. Whenever I get into one of those moods but still feel the urge to create, I usually take a relaxing walk or head out for a drive through places that are both familiar and, occasionally, new.

Yesterday, I found myself on the Natchez Trace Parkway, a road I know well. I stopped by a few of my favorite subjects, and many of these scenes will probably look familiar to you. The overcast skies and occasional light rain added just the right atmosphere.

One of the things I love most about photography is discovering new compositions in places I've photographed countless times before. Rain or shine, there's always something new to see.

I hope you enjoy the images.

The Soul of the Town Square

I love the town squares found throughout small-town America. In a world that changes so quickly, they preserve a tangible connection to the past. At the heart of many of these squares stands a courthouse—a symbol not only of the rule of law, but also of the community itself. These historic buildings have witnessed generations of local history, making them some of my favorite subjects to photograph.

I hope you enjoy these images of the Marshall County Courthouse in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Capturing the Spirit of the 250th

I love seeing our community come together to celebrate. What better occasion than honoring the 250th birthday of our nation?

No matter your background, age, or where you come from, we gather as one to celebrate the Red, White, and Blue.

As always, I had a great time capturing a few special moments from the Spring Hill celebration at the Crossings. I hope you enjoy the photos!

Let Freedom Ring!!

Wow—what a show! This was hands down the best fireworks display I've ever seen in Maury County. The fireworks were incredible, and the drone show that followed was the perfect finishing touch.

Maybe this was a one-time celebration for our country's 250th birthday, or maybe it's the beginning of a new tradition. I'm hoping it's the latter!

Like and follow STL for more photos from this unforgettable event.

MERICA!!

Happy 4th of July! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend.

My original plan was to photograph Columbia's First Friday event and then head out to capture some fireworks. The weather had other ideas and washed out the First Friday festivities, but thankfully the rain cleared just in time for the area's fireworks shows to go on as planned.

I decided to photograph the fireworks at the Columbia Academy event because I thought the historic buildings of the Columbia Arsenal—dating back to the 1890s—would make for a unique composition. After confirming where the fireworks would be launched, I picked what I was sure was the perfect spot.

Well... not quite. 😂

As soon as Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA finished playing and the fireworks began, I quickly realized my "perfect" composition had one major flaw: the fireworks weren't reaching high enough to clear the building. It was a pretty spectacular miscalculation on my part!

Laughing at myself, I grabbed my tripod and hustled to a new location. With the fireworks already underway, there wasn't time to fine-tune the composition—I just started shooting. Considering the scramble, I don't think the result turned out too bad. This was my favorite shot of the night.

I hope you enjoy the photo, and I hope you all have a safe and happy Independence Day!

Lynnville After Dark

Those who follow my work know I love photographing after dark. After my first visit to Lynnville, I couldn't stop wondering how the town would look once the sun went down, so I came back the very next night to find out. I had hoped the train at the railroad museum would be illuminated, but the area was mostly dark. So, I followed the light instead, focusing on the storefronts and the Iron Horse building. As I flew around downtown, I found myself making mental notes for a few future project ideas. This charming little town has plenty more to explore, so stay tuned for more from Lynnville.

A Step Back in Time: My First Visit to Lynnville

Lynnville, Tennessee had been on my radar for quite a while, but somehow I never found the time to visit. When a coworker mentioned the town recently, I decided it was finally time to see what I'd been missing.

What a charming little town! It felt like stepping back in time—almost like Marty McFly in *Back to the Future*. One of my favorite stops was the railroad museum, which brought back fond memories of my own hometown, where the railroad museum serves as the centerpiece of the community.

I spent some time wandering around and making a few photographs before heading home. I also made a note to return during business hours so I can explore more of what Lynnville has to offer.

I hope you enjoy these photographs from my first visit to this delightful little town.
