What an amazing day in the backyard! I witnessed young Eastern bluebirds, Northern cardinals, Tufted titmice, Carolina wrens, Carolina chickadees, Chipping sparrows, Blue jays, House finches, Eastern phoebes, Brown thrashers, Downy woodpeckers, Red-bellied woodpeckers, and even a flyby of a juvenile Coopers hawk. I love this time of the year!

During yesterday's historic snowstorm, I was able to spend some quality time in my one-person blind and observe the feeding frenzy in my backyard. Most birds were interested in the smorgasbord I had out for them, but the Eastern bluebirds were more interested in what nature provided. With blizzard-like conditions, I managed to capture this male gathering berries while he fought the gusting wind and snow. 🐦🫐🌬️🌨️❄️

I'm not sure if this is a good sign for 2026 or I've peaked already, but the timing of my trip south from Baltimore was perfect to catch a glimpse of a mega rarity visiting the US. The Red-flanked bluetail is an Old World flycatcher that breeds in northern Asia, parts of central Asia, and northeastern Europe and winters mainly in southeast Asia, in the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas, Taiwan, and northern Indochina. The fact that this was my first bird photographed in 2026 has me pretty excited! I've attached the range map for fun. 🐦🌏💕

Every once in a while, I'm surprised by how well a photo turns out. To be honest, I can't remember what was behind this male American goldfinch to create this background, but I'm thankful it was there! 🐥💐💜

Though the lighting was quite poor, I was still thrilled to see this male American redstart pause for more than a millisecond to get its picture taken! If you ever tried to follow one of these through the trees, you'd know what I'm talking about. 🐦💨

Once in awhile, you are gifted with a pretty decent consolation prize. In search of my new nemesis (the Philadelphia vireo... maybe because I'm from Pittsburgh?), I saw a flash of color through this tiny opening along a pond. I flung my camera up, and was excited to see this striking male Wood duck float out into the one patch of sunlight, lighting up his rainbow of colors. Then, to my surprise, the gorgeous female comes up right beside him. Usually, when you see Wood ducks in the wild, they do not let you get anywhere near them, so this was a nice treat.

This morning, I had an incredible experience on Lake Norman chasing a Long-tailed Jaeger. Not only did I get amazing looks on the water, I was also treated to some aerial battles with some Black terns. This bird is pretty far out of its range (look at the last photo) and usually stays miles off of the coast. This is a young bird, so most likely it is a bit lost and hopefully will find its way back out to sea safely!

Special thanks to my friend Jeff for taking me out on his boat for these looks!
