The Fire Thief’s Roost
He sits on the boundary of the living and the dead.
This is "The Fire Thief’s Roost," the first piece in a new series exploring the folklore of the Ethereal Wilds. Here, the forest is not just wood and leaf; it is a vault of old magic, and the Northern Flicker is not merely a bird, but the Keeper of the Flame.
Ancient legends tell us that when the world was cold, the Flicker was the only creature brave enough to challenge the Sky. He didn't fly to the heavens; he built a path. He fired a chain of arrows into the firmament—one splitting the nock of the other—creating a ladder to the stars. He climbed this "Silent Arrow" chain, stole a single ember from the gods, and hid it beneath his wings to bring warmth back to the earth.
The journey down scorched him. The heat stained the shafts of his feathers a brilliant, hidden red and left a black mark of soot upon his chest.
In this image, the purple shadows of the forest try to claim him, but the red tinge of his feathers pushes the darkness back. He rests on a withered Ponderosa spire—the ash of his labors—remaining a gilded vessel holding the memory of fire.
