TWIG EATER 🌟

How can the largest and heaviest species of deer live on leaves, twigs and aquatic plant life? The short answer is, Moose EAT ALOT!
Moose are herbivores, meaning that they only eat plants. The name "moose" is derived from the Algonquin word "moosu" meaning "bark stripper".

Moose eat up to 70 pounds of complex carbohydrates a day which means that they are constantly browsing for plant materials. Even though the protein content of plants is low, Moose get plenty of protein in their diet by eating so much and so often. Moose use the nitrogen in plants to derive the proteins they need to grow such big bodies and, for the males, huge antlers. Big bull Moose can weigh up to a ton!

What's a Mother to do?

The annual spring salmon run is on but the fish are blocked from entering Silver Salmon Creek. A Russian fishing trawler shuts off the way to their spawning grounds.

A rather thin Alaskan Brown Bear sow seems to know that food is going to be in short supply for a while. If she doesn't gorge herself on the expected bounty of gamefish, her triplet cubs can't nurse. All will fail to thrive. Standing on the shore of Cook Inlet, she appears to sense the danger. The cubs keep playing.

It’s February and in , the shadows are long and the crystalline snows are deep.

The average daily temperature is minus 10 degrees F with dips in temperature to minus 44 degrees.

Now is the time.

on little more than dried grasses that they dig for by sweeping their massive heads back and forth through the snow to uncover what little fodder there is left.

Often, deep keeps the bison cut off from their winter grazing patches. When urges the herd to move or die, a lead cow will break a trail and, in single file, the rest of the herd follows in her tracks. I have never seen such will, drive and determination until I watched this hunger-driven Bison cow struggle for over an hour to get herself and her herd through shoulder- deep drifts. I was pulling so hard for her that I burst out in tears the moment she made it to snow pack .

“Every night the with his wild monkey-face calls through the black branches, and the mice freeze and the rabbits shiver in the snowy fields—-and then there is the long, deep trough of silence when he stops singing, and steps into the air.”
