Shout out to Rosanna Nykanen () for painting the kiddos at my second cousin’s mermaid birthday party—-while laid up with a shattered ankle (from skating in the roller derby—because she’s that awesome)! The mermaids were magical and she fulfilled the littles’ foot art requests without hesitation. 😂 We’re so grateful she took a break from making adults look beautiful to make magic with the kiddos.

I’m not going to lie—I love that this location is so close to my home! The Crestridge Ecological Reserve is such a beautiful location for photos (in fact, and I did a swap for Christmas cards there this year!), and I knew it would be a perfect background for my friend Rochelle and her beautiful family. I’m so happy I could capture the silliness and sibling love in these shots.

Q: What does a photo retoucher do?! Part 3

A: Mother Nature does what she wants. You can schedule your photo shoot, check the weather app constantly, and plan accordingly. But sometimes those beach shots do not happen the way you want. Days are grey. Wind is blowing.
However, with some sneaky background creation, lighting alterations, wind on dress crime adjustment, etc, a shot with happy subjects and dreary background can turn into sparkly sparkle fun!

Fun fact: This took me a good 45 minutes. There have been a lot of advancements in AI editing/retouching options, but there is still a lot of human focus/alterations that are needed!

Q: What does a photo retoucher do?! Part 2

A: A gorgeous subject can be undermined by clothing snafus, background details, lighting, etc.
With a little retoucher magic, shadows, pants wrinkles, microphones, and other unnecessary items can be removed, making this diva shine in the still image as much as she does during the live performance!

Q: What does a photo retoucher do?!
A: A photographer can line up an excellent shot, but there are many factors that can get in the way/distract from the intended focus of the image. My job is to remove those factors. In addition, movement can create weird body shapes when frozen by the click of the shutter.

In the first image, the singer on the left (that’s me!) has a stump for an arm, because an audience member’s head is blocking the rest of it. The singer on the right has a bass player growing out of her head. The drummer, though somewhat blurred, is centered in the photo so he still draws focus.

In the retouched image, the singers are now the focus.

This was a fun one to work on!!

I spend most of my time retouching photos for other photographers, and it was a joy to get back behind the camera and photograph my beautiful cousin Jessie and her family! Last time I photographed Jessie and Thomas was 2016—their oldest was born the very next day so we got our session in just under the wire! I love the family dynamic of these four, and boy do these girls love their grandma. 😍
