Probably the best way to spot a cicada is to watch it land. Once they land, they tend to camouflage exceptionally well. They can still be spotted, but it will be more difficult. I like to look for their side profile. If you see them from the side, they tend to stand out from the branch, like in the first pic. Once they’re flush with the bark, as in the second image, they're harder to find. This cicada moved from the first position to the second one as I watched it😂
