Nelsonville Brick Park in Ohio is a preserved remnant of the region’s once-thriving brickmaking industry, rooted in the industrial history of the Hocking Valley.

Origins in the Brick Industry

By the mid‑1800s, Ohio’s Hocking Valley became a major center for brick production, with Nelsonville emerging as a key hub. The first brick plant in the town was built in 1877, and by 1880 an expansion was constructed, creating large down‑draft kilns that fired bricks for paving, construction, and infrastructure projects across the region. At its peak, the Nelsonville Brick Company produced 25 million bricks annually, employing over 120 men. Bricks from the plant, known as “Nelsonville Block,” won first prize at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, cementing their reputation.

Decline and Closure

The rise of concrete and asphalt in the early 20th century reduced demand for brick. By World War I, the industry was in decline, and the Nelsonville Brick Plant closed permanently around 1937–1940. Most kilns were demolished, but a few remained as ruins.

Preservation Efforts

In 1979, the site was designated as Nelsonville Park to protect the surviving kilns and related structures. The park was formally established in 1980 to preserve two down‑draft brick kilns, which were restored and interpreted for visitors. The area is paved with Nelsonville blocks and decorative pavers, linking the park’s landscape to the broader built environment shaped by the brick industry.

Historical Significance

Today, Nelsonville Brick Park is more than a local relic—it’s a tangible link to the Hocking Valley’s industrial transformation from coal to brick production. The surviving kilns, along with the distinctive bricks and pavers, illustrate the scale, technology, and regional impact of the industry. The site also serves as a case study in selective preservation, retaining enough structures and materials to tell the story without recreating the full brickworks.

I have a good amount of new photos to post, but will not have them ready tonight. I stopped in Nelsonville, Ohio, Haydenville, Ohio, and Marietta, Ohio. To hold you over until then, I have one single image to share that I captured with my cellphone in St. Clairsville, Ohio, yesterday. Most of us know what this is but many of the younger generation may have never seen one. Enjoy it. 😂
