Forest foliage freaks out and frost leaks down too soon / leafs peeping out from beneath the roots / this year the colors were in cahoots / so we confronted them by photoshoots.

This is a composite photo.

If you want to use the word "photoshopped", then call me a digital artist, not a photographer. But I'm both.

The eye sees so differently than the camera in terms of tonal range, contrast, and perspective. So editing & compositing, to me, helps create an image that feels and looks more congruent with what we see.

Foliage was wild this year.

For many years I've envisioned taking a photo from a viewpoint on Pisgah or Mt. Hor that parallel Lake Willoughby. At sunset - with peak foliage.

And I had visited Lake Willoughby twice before in peak foliage and didn't make/have the confidence or courage to ask the people I was with at the time to go do this passion project. I thought it was too selfish, or that I was burdening them with doing my own thing.

Maybe that's why I prefer to do these photography trips solo most of the time.

Strangely, when I went to photograph the scene I had been dreaming of for years in a sort of comeback-revenge for not doing it earlier...

I still felt like the same person. The search continues.

Where solitude is comfortable...and then uncomfortable...and then comfortable again...and then...

Where you and your bike complete a journey you're not sure you were able to do together.

Are you feeling berry adventurous? What is your way of experiencing and getting to know a place when you travel?

For me, I've found that combining human power (mostly biking), a scavenger hunt approach to art materials, and a surprise location, my day feels fulfilling.

This up-cycled child's bike helmet idea was inspired by Schartner Farms North in North Conway.

I had left by bicycle in the morning from CoHo: Conway Hostel and found a Bell Bike Helmets at a local thrift shop. I usually like to find a local art store, but a Michaels Stores was available.

I rode out to the Schartner Farms North with some sourdough bread and other snacks, bought some strawberry jam at their stand, and painted the cliffs on the hillside looking out from the farm.

Over the months, I worked on the helmet with acrylic markers, incorporating puns into the design painted on the helmet.

Mountains...now that's my jam!

Cutest thing Ive seen all winter! "Lollipop" races at the Bill Koch Youth League Festival hosted by Rikert last weekend. Come for the skiing, stay for the art, festivities, community, and and glitter station. The vibe I collected was a balance between racing and having fun. The eastern mass xc team's coaches came dressed in tutu skirts and rocked it. Volunteers and parents dressed in mythical creature garb. Adventure and art!? This festival...I'm totally smitten about. Still smiling...

Stoked to run around the mountains taking pictures with hundreds of people this weekend. Being active, talking to hundreds of people both kids and adults, taking pictures, AND being in the mountains is a rare, special, and my favorite type of experience.
