Did you know every mighty oak starts as one tiny acorn? These little acorns are already getting ready for their big job—providing food for wildlife and, if conditions are just right, growing into the next generation of beautiful oak trees!

MORNING DUTIES

The sun shuffles about in slippers of dew,
wrapped in its misty white robe;
yawns as it begins its duties.

Draws back the curtain of night
exposes the reality of dawn,
time to awake.

Bends and whispers to sleeping flowers,
“The morning is upon us.”
Kisses each petaled head.

Tickles river’s ambling currents,
blinks at its own reflection,
plays hide and seek with the shadows.

Gently nudges sleeping fawn,
warms coat of silver fox,
dazzles sleepy-eyed squirrel.

Now morning duties done,
she climbs to designated spot.
Another day to oversee.

Did You Know? Eagles Strengthen Their Bond at the Nest

After their breathtaking aerial courtship displays, a pair of eagles often returns to their nest to reinforce their bond. They add sticks, preen one another, and call back and forth before mating.

Mating usually takes place on or near the nest, often on a sturdy branch or the nest itself. The act is brief, but the pair may mate several times before the female lays her eggs.

From there, both parents work together to incubate the eggs, protect the nest, and raise their eaglets—a remarkable example of teamwork in the wild.
