🤿 If you're a new diver, which pieces of scuba gear should you buy first?

With so much gear to choose from, it can be difficult to know what's worth investing in and what you can continue renting.

In this video, Elma shares three pieces of dive gear she recommends owning, especially if you're just getting started!

💬 Divers, what was the first piece of scuba gear you bought? And what would you recommend to someone starting out?

📸 Ever wondered how photographers trigger a strobe that isn’t attached to their camera?

Remote strobes can completely change the look of a wide-angle image. They can light up the inside of a wreck, create backlighting behind a subject, or add depth to a scene in a way that’s very difficult to achieve with strobes mounted on your housing.

The Marelux remote strobe system makes that possible without running a long fiber optic cable across the scene.

In our latest article, Nirupam breaks down exactly how it works underwater, including:

💡 How the Marelux Lumiflux sends the trigger signal
📡 How far the signal can travel underwater
⚡ How the Terminal Flash Repeater works with compatible strobes
📷 Why strobes can be useful for remote lighting compared with video lights
🤿 What he learned testing the system on the wrecks of Truk Lagoon

There are also some very cool examples showing just how much a carefully placed third strobe can change an image.

If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with remote lighting underwater, this is a good one to save.

🌙 6 blackwater images shot with the Nikon 60mm f/2.8 Macro.

Blackwater diving gives you some of the strangest, smallest, and most fascinating subjects in the ocean, and a macro lens is pretty much essential when many of them are only a few centimeters long.

Here are six of our favorite images captured using the Nikon 60mm f/2.8 Macro. 📸

Which one is your favorite? 👇

🇵🇭 Have you heard of Anda, Bohol? It might just be one of the Philippines’ most underrated diving destinations!

🐢 We’re talking colorful coral walls, incredible macro life, frogfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and LOTS of turtles. On one dive, our very own Nirupam Nigam encountered 28 turtles!

📸 And for underwater photographers, there’s another reason to visit: mandarin fish! Anda offers some incredible opportunities to photograph these colorful little fish, including their fascinating mating behavior at sunset.

🎉 JOIN US FOR OUR NEXT BLUEWATER PHOTO SOCIAL NIGHT!

On October 27th, Nirupam will be sharing his experiences diving in Bohol, along with his tips for photographing mandarin fish.

Here’s what we’ll cover:
🐠 Where to dive in Bohol and what marine life to expect
📷 Camera settings, lighting, and composition for mandarin fish photography
🔦 Tips for focusing in low light and capturing mating behavior

📱 Some of the first shots taken with the new DiveVolk SeaTouch 6 Pro!

Nirupam took the SeaTouch 6 Pro out for a test dive in Washington this past weekend.

The housing gives you full touchscreen control of your smartphone underwater, so you can shoot, change settings, switch between photo and video, and review your images directly through the housing. 📸

Here’s a first look at what it can do underwater.

Would you shoot underwater with your phone? 👇

📸 How good is the Olympus TG-7 for underwater macro photography?

For the past two and a half years, Lisa Garner has been putting the TG-7 to work on research dives in Sodwana Bay, photographing some seriously tiny subjects, including pygmy pipehorses and one of the world’s smallest known seahorse species.

And when a clear image can actually make the difference between a usable scientific record and a missed data point, the camera needs to do more than just take a nice photo.

In the article, Lisa shares why the TG-7 has become such an important part of her research setup, including:

🔬 How she uses Microscope Mode for tiny subjects
📷 Why RAW capture matters for identification work
💡 The lighting setup she pairs with it underwater
🤿 Why a small, simple camera can sometimes be exactly what you need

She also shares how she uses a GoPro HERO11 alongside the TG-7 to document behavior, including footage of Cylix nkosi mating.

If you shoot macro with a TG-7, or you’ve been wondering what this little camera can actually do underwater, this is a really interesting read.

These are some of the images Wayne Tarr captured during our Bluewater Photo meet-up in Sodwana Bay, South Africa! 🇿🇦

📸 Wayne was shooting with a Sony A7CR in an Ikelite housing with dual Ikelite DS160 II strobes. For wide angle, he used the Sony 16–25mm lens, and for macro, the Sony 90mm Macro.

A PADI Assistant Instructor with years of diving experience across South Africa, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, Wayne was right at home back in the water at Sodwana Bay! 🤿

Have you met Wayne or worked with him before? Say hello in the comments! 👋
