Red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) have one of the most unusual life cycles of any amphibian in eastern North America. They hatch as aquatic larvae, leave the water as bright orange-red juveniles called red efts, and may spend several years roaming damp forests before returning to ponds as olive-green aquatic adults.

This here is a Green heron (Butorides virescens) and they are small but surprisingly clever wetland hunters. They’re one of the few bird species known to use tools, sometimes dropping insects, feathers, or bits of food onto the water to lure fish within striking distance

Purple Martins (Progne subis) are North America’s largest swallow and one of our most remarkable aerial insectivores, spending much of their lives in flight as they hunt flying insects over fields and wetlands.

🪺 East of the Rocky Mountains, they now rely almost entirely on human-provided nest houses after the loss of natural nesting cavities. Habitat loss, invasive competitors like European Starlings and House Sparrows, and declining insect populations continue to threaten their populations.

This summer at Erie National Wildlife Refuge, conservation efforts made a real impact: 37 nesting pairs laid 87 eggs, with an incredible 93% hatch rate. It’s a great reminder that dedicated biologists, volunteers, and hands-on habitat management can help ensure these incredible birds continue to thrive.

Happy Fourth of July!🇺🇸

Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of working as a wildlife biologist in the American West and now on the East Coast, and it has completely shaped and changed how I see this country. I’ve watched other biologists spend countless hours conducting surveys, tracking through snow, restoring habitat, collecting data, all in remote places to ensure public land and wildlife have a future. Most people don’t see this work however it protects the landscapes and species that define this country.

The first three photos are some of our countries biggest comeback stories: the bald eagle, black-footed ferret, and the grizzly which have come back from the brink of extinction but have been brought back from the efforts of biologists and collaborators and are a framework on how we can conserve in the future.

To me, patriotism means protecting what makes this county amazing: our wildlife, public lands, democracy, and the incredible diversity of people that call this country home. Through my travels and work I have met many amazing people with amazingly beautiful stories and it just shows that our country is a real melting pot of all different cultures and people and it’s been a pleasure to experience.

The America I believe in is one that values science, protects public land that belongs to all of us, fights for a cleaner environment for us and wildlife, and one where everyone has the freedom to pursue their dreams and is treated with respect no matter their background, who they love, or what they look like. Through my photography, I want to show others the beauty I have found in this country and I want to remind people that conservation or freedom can’t be taken for granted: and it exists because we as the people have fought for them. I hope we can continue this legacy and leave this country more beautiful than we found it. Happy fourth of July!!🇺🇸
