I was treated to a couple excellent Osprey sightings last weekend from the Pontoon from Presque Isle Canoe & Boat Livery on Presque Isle Bay. While there are some breeding pairs along the southern Lake Erie shores, they generally spend their summers further north. Their return to our area signals fall migration is upon us.

Belted Kingfisher, Presque Isle Bay. Spotted not one but three Kingfishers hunting near the shore of Presque Isle Bay. They are usually hard to spot and often heard but not seen, but watching the shoreline from the water gave a different perspective and I was able to watch them perch, hunt, and even come up with a snack!

In honor of National Photography Day, which also coincides with World Photography Day, I'd like to share a few of my favorite photos of the last year. Pictured are the Dickcissel, Kirtland's Warbler, American Goldfinch, and Northern Cardinal.

World/National Photography, part of the broader World Photography Week celebrated between August 12-26th this year, honors the Daguerreotype Process, thought to be the first true technique of developing a photograph, invented in 1837 by Joseph Nicephore Niepcce and Louis Daguerre in France.

It's astounding to see the advancement of photography in the last 200 years, from a 15 minute process to develop one photo on a copper plate to modern digital cameras capable of taking 40 photos per second and we owe it all to two 19th century French scientists.

One of my favorite birds, the Cedar Waxwing, spotted at Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves Headlands Dunes Nature Preserve, with more than a dozen of them chasing each other back and forth low across the trail. This was just the second time I have seen a flock of them together, and the first time I got to witness them so close.

More from the National Aviary, this time featuring the "Canary's Call" area. This is one of the non free flight areas. Pictured are the Asian Fairy-Bluebird, Vietnam Pheasant, Venezuelan Troupial, Malayan Flying fox, Burrowing Owl, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, and a Tawny Frogmouth.

More from my visit to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh earlier this summer. The Aviary is separated into several distinct habitats, three of which are free-flight. Today I am highlighting the Grasslands area, which is the smallest, but also most active, free flight habitat. Pictured are the Island Canary, White-throated Bee-eater, Saipan White-eye, Red-crested Finch, Owl Finch, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Masked Bobwhite, and a Cuban Grassquit.
