Opus One is the One!

Just a mini Opus vertical. 84 vs 85. The 84 still has decent fruit but it is starting to fade and the finish is a little clipped. The 85 is still going strong with dried plum, blackberry, leather, cumin, and dried rose petal.

Cali Cabs

Some of the killer California wines from Friday night. The Jeroboam of 1994 Insignia was one of my personal favorites. Insignia has a well earned reputation for needing 20 years in the bottle before it is ready to drink. With only 26 years in this large format I was slightly dubious if the wine would be drinking or not, but wow! What a amazing wine. We decanted the wine about 45 min before pouring it, but this wine lit up the moment it was opened. Wild black cherries, dark currants, pipe to***co, and cooking spice shot out of the glass like a firecracker. The palate was satiny smooth and while the tannins were still present, they were reserved enough to provide backbone while not overtaking the gorgeous fruit.

The 1990 magnum of Stags Leap Cask 23 was a real surprise with almost as much fruit as the 94 Insignia. The Stags leap was slightly more reserved showing black olive, mocha, plum, and cinnamon. A lovely bottle!

Competing for wine of the night was the 1990 Dunn Howell Mountain. We actually poppe two of these, they were so good! Classic dark fruit with blackberry, black cherry, and vanilla bean. This wine was perfectly balanced and drank like a perfectly smooth highway road on a moonlight night.

It has been a while since I have had a aged BV. The 1966 Georges de Latour was still drinkable but had lost almost all of its fruit. I’m sure if we would have tasted it on its own it would have shown better but coming in the heels of the younger and more vibrant Cali Cabs the wine was unfortunately lost..

1996 Krug is Rocking!

After we tasted the 85 Dom Perignon we popped the 1996 Krug for a compare and contrast. While the DP was honied, rich, and sultry. The Krug was more full in body with crisper acidity and brighter fruit.

The 96 Krug showed crisp apple with lemon zest shaved over top to add a pop of acidity. The palate was not as developed or complex as the dom, but that is a impossibly high standard. The Krug was drinking great and in a very nice window.

Some Fun Wines!

When the boys come in from Waco, they always bring the heat! Last nights lineup was a real treat, with some killer bottles of wine.

Bordeaux represented by 1978 Mouton, 1998 Haut Brion, and 1986 Cheval Blanc. California was in the house with yet another 1978 Ridge Montabello, and the 2008 Sine Qua Non extended barrel aged syrah – The Duel. Unfortunately no Dom Perignon in the house yesterday, but we made up for it with the 1999 Salon and the 1996 Krug. Last but not least was the 1996 Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Vignots.

My wine of the night was the 1996 Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Vignots. This wine has been in my friends cellar for almost 8 years and I am super glad he finally decided to pull it out! The wine needed about one hour in the decanter before it woke up, but when it did WOW! The nose was showing freshly picked cranberries with pomegranate, earl grey tea, and limestone minerality. The palate was soft as a mothers kiss. Elegant red fruit mingled with anise, freshly picked herbs, and powdered chocolate. A long finish perfectly capped the wine and made it difficult to keep any vino in the glass.

The 1978 Mouton was served blind and I called it 1983 Pichon Lalande. A distinct green note presided over the wine backed by musky earthy aromas and notes of black cherry, graphite, and cedar. As the wine opened it got richer and darker in fruit while still showing notes of sliced bell pepper. This may have been my Bordeaux of the night.

The 1998 Haut Brion was a real astonishment for me and was showing amazing well. The wine needed about a hour in the decanter but once it opened up the glass brimmed with ripe black currant, plum, mocha, violets, and allspice. The earthy nuances were just starting to peak out from behind the fruit, but they will take another 5-10 years before they really start to show.
