Finding the right perspective sometimes means looking in unexpected places.

For this lobby seating area, the strongest composition happened from inside the elevator. So Matt Gillispie held the doors open while I worked.

Unfortunately, the elevator had other ideas and eventually interpreted our extended stay as a crisis, automatically contacting emergency services.

Being one to always ask for forgiveness instead of permission, I apologized.

Our method? Not officially recommended.

It’s a good reminder that creating thoughtful interior photography is constant problem solving on set, one unexpected obstacle at a time.

This year has been different.

For a long time, work occupied almost all of the space in my life. I poured myself into building a business, chasing goals, and constantly thinking about what was next.

This year, life asked for that space back.

There have been health challenges, difficult conversations, aging parents, loss, and the quiet realization that the people I love won’t always be here. None of those things were on my list of goals for the year, but they’ve shaped me more than anything else has.

For a while, I interpreted the slower pace as being stuck.
Now I think it was an invitation to pay attention.

To be present. To redefine success. To stop measuring my worth by how much I produced and start appreciating the person I was becoming while life was unfolding around me.

Photography has always been about noticing the things that are easy to overlook; the way light changes a room, the details that tell a story, the beauty in slowing down long enough to really see what’s in front of you.

Maybe that’s why this season has changed the way I see my work, too.

I’m still creating. Still growing. But I’m learning that a full life isn’t one where work takes up all the space. It’s one where there’s room for the people, moments, and experiences that remind you why you create in the first place.
