I spent time with Jan recently—listening, photographing, and learning more about her story.
It’s one of those stories that stays with you.
There’s love, loss, strength and a life that didn’t follow a straight line, but led her exactly where she was meant to be.
I shared her story as part of my Rooted & Radiant series.
If you have a few minutes, I’d love for you to read it. 💛
You can read her story here: https://www.kellishannon.com/blog/jan-sikes-rooted-and-radiant/

I took Rylee’s senior photos years ago.
She had big dreams and a quiet determination.

Today, she’s graduated from Pratt and has landed a job with an architectural firm in New York.

For this session, she brought a childhood photo of herself, and I couldn’t resist capturing them together.

That little girl is still there.
She just grew into her dreams.

This is why I love photography so much.
It holds the beginning and the becoming in the same frame.

I’m never just photographing who someone is today…
I’m photographing who they’re on their way to being.

And sometimes, we get to see them arrive.

As a photographer, I’m always aware of the big moments.
But honestly, it’s usually the small ones that stay with me.
The lift.
The laughter that just happens.
The way a mother looks at her baby like nothing else matters.
Those are the images that end up meaning the most.

This is where love begins. ❤️

What do we do when we’re feeling a little under the weather?

Apparently, I set up my lights and test red and navy.

Red has always been one of my colors.
It has a way of reminding me who I am.

Being on the other side of the camera from my normal position helps me understand how scary and vulnerable we can feel with a lens pointed at us.

I'm always learning and experimenting-it's who I am!

I asked if I could photograph him.
He said yes.

I printed these for his family.

Moments like this remind me that photography isn’t about posing or perfection, it’s about honoring a life, exactly as it is.

This is why I love doing what I do!

Love looks different for everyone, and that’s what makes it beautiful.

It can be a father and daughter finding their rhythm.
Two people saying yes to a future together.
A new family holding something fragile and brand new.
Grandparents wrapped up in the joy of their grandchildren.

This Valentine’s season, I’m offering Love, Always portrait sessions to celebrate connection in all its forms-quietly, honestly, and without clichés.

From this view, Diamond Head feels less like a landmark and more like a guardian of the island. Yes, I did climb it and could see Pearl Harbor from the top. It's truly magnificent! ❤️🩶

One of my favorite memories — an evening wagon ride with my brother-in-law, Kern and his beautiful draft horses. 🐴💛 Do you have a family memory that makes you smile every time? We are made of memories!
FYI, Kern no longer drives his horses, yet he does teach meditation , Tai Chi and energy modalities to an interested group in Montana. I have known Kern for 50+ years!!!❤️💚🧡
