Last night’s nearly full moon. Not quite the Blue Moon, that happens tonight, but sometimes it’s better to take the photo than wait for the perfect moment and risk missing it altogether.

A week ago I was down at Surfside Beach, SC for a little vacation. From the condo on my last night there (with a little help from a 400mm lens) I was able to see main Myrtle up the coast along with a Southwest Airlines plane coming in for a landing at dusk.

Silver Run Tunnel ( #19 North Bend Rail Trail)

Believed to be the most haunted of the North Bend Rail Trail tunnels. It is said that the ghost of a woman who threw herself onto the tracks lingers.

One of the unique attributes about this tunnel compared to some of the others is that it's located in a curve. Approaching the tunnel from the trail you feel the cold air coming from it before you even see it. When you get closer you realize you can't see the exit, it's simply a black hole.

As you move further into the darkness a small bit of light slowly, or maybe not so slowly depending on how fast you walk, begins to come into view. It's a hint of light bouncing off the wall. You finish rounding the bend and there is the exit.

Upon turning around to leave it becomes clear that the sharpest part of the curve is the way you just came out. Heading back through the entrance comes into view far quicker.

Whether this tunnel is haunted is a matter of personal belief. But its atmosphere, and its setting tucked into the mountains, does more than enough to inspire story and folklore.

Cemetery on a hill is near the North Bend Rail Trail.

Dates on the headstones are predominantly from the latter half 1800s, though a few extend into the early 1900s, representing several different families. Many of the stones note that the person or family came from County Mayo in Ireland and immigrated to the United States.

That simple line on a gravestone gives so much history. Some may have left Ireland during the Great Famine, crossed an ocean in search of a better life, arrived in New York City, and eventually made their way deep into the mountains of West Virginia, where they built their homes.
