A bald eagle perched between me and the evening sun.

The bright, washed-out sky wasn’t an accident. The sun was just outside the frame, flooding the scene with light and creating a backlit portrait that highlights the eagle’s silhouette, feather detail, and glowing white head.

Sometimes you don’t get to choose the light. You choose what to do with it.

Approximately four years ago, I spent a quiet June evening watching the sky turn circles over Lake Beshear. The stars never stopped moving. We just don’t notice it until we slow down long enough to look.

By layering multiple long exposures together, I was able to capture that motion and turn hours of movement into a single photograph. It’s a reminder that even on the calmest nights, our world is constantly in motion.

Every feather seems to have a job.

Built for fishing, built for flight, and perfectly at home over the waters of Lake Beshear.

Lake Beshear is getting into its busiest stretch of the year, but on this morning back in 2019, the water was calm enough to reflect every color in the sky. It’s hard to beat a quiet sunrise before the lake fills with the sounds of summer.

A lot of people know ospreys for their yellow eyes, but younger birds wear shades of orange before reaching adulthood. This one came in looking like a feathered fighter jet with glowing headlights. ✈️🦅

‘Too dark.’
‘Too cropped.’
‘Needs more ducks.’

You all know I have a soft spot for ducks.
This mallard gave me one of those tiny moments that’s easy to miss unless you’re watching closely.

I finally spotted Lake Beshear’s first group of baby mallards for spring 2026. I counted twelve tiny fuzzballs weaving through the water like a floating pile of ping pong balls with feet.

Baby ducks are still my favorite thing to spot around the lake. By now, you all have probably figured out I might like ducks just a little bit 😂 🦆

Not every wildlife photo tells a perfect story. Some tell a survivor’s story.

This bald eagle caught my attention immediately because of its right eye. I’m not sure if it’s an old injury, disease, or something else entirely, but it’s definitely one of the more unique eagles I’ve photographed around the lake.

I’ll add another photo in the comments showing both eyes. If anyone with experience in birds of prey knows what may have caused it, I’d love to learn more.
