I went for a walk yesterday at a park with my camera, as l often do, just to see if I could conjure up some inspiration to shoot. Early in my walk, I saw an older gentleman taking some pictures with his camera, as I typically do. I walked past him and mentioned something in passing about it being a nice day to shoot some images. He noticed my camera and proceeded to chat with me, simply on the basis of our shared interest. I found myself speaking to this man for over 30 minutes about everything and anything photography. He even told me about his 34-year-long marriage with his wife and how she has supported him throughout his journey as a photographer. He took an incredible image of former President Obama holding a baby here in Dayton, Ohio, during his candidacy run. He has documented many of the changes in the city over the past 30+ years. I learned that he was a quiet man of many extraordinary experiences. But what I noticed most was how much of myself I saw in him. We believe a lot of the same things when it comes to this art, but also when it comes to life and how certain situations are handled. When he spoke about his wife, he mentioned how people complain about how spoiled he makes her... his response is, “That’s not being spoiled... it’s called being appreciated.” Hearing about their relationship inspired me. But just learning about him as a person inspired me so much more! He’s captured so much history in the city but mentioned that in some of the scenarios where he might be recognized for his work, there are usually never too many photos of himself to share. I then asked him if I could have the honor of taking his portrait. He agreed. This was the result. Mr. Terry, an extraordinary regular man with a passion for life, showing that through his lens. I appreciate the experience, sir!
If you ever see this man around the city, you’ll be able to tell [him] from his hat—he says he loves these hats and always wears them. At the very least, shake his hand.
