Seth Bullock was one of the important figures in the early days of Deadwood. He and partner Sol Star opened a hardware store, which still survives as the foundation of the Bullock Hotel later built over and around the portion of the store that survived one of Deadwood's many fires. Bullock was also sheriff in Deadwood for a time and a good friend of President Theodore Roosevelt.

This statue of Bullock by sculptor Edward Hlavka can be found observing Deadwood's historic Main Street in front of the Bullock Hotel today.

In 1874 the Black Hills of South Dakota were a relatively unknown spot on the map until Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer lead an expedition through the heart of this small mountain range. Significant discoveries were made along the route, but none more than the finding of gold that lead to full-scale invasion of the area which had been promised to Native American tribes by treaty. It wasn't long before non-Natives filled the valleys looking for riches and the tribes were pushed onto reservations, leading to many conflicts.
