To all the mothers
who once were girls,
before they became
the women,
who mothered us
in their turn.

To the stories they carried
and the burdens they shouldered,
and the courage they left us
to go mothering
again.

There is something about the word florilegium — a gathering of flowers — that feels like an invitation as much as a description. Come. Look closely. Make something that lasts, something that endures.

This June, I’m leading a week-long workshop  built around exactly that theme. We’ll spend a day at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens photographing the summer blooms, take some local walks, and return to the studio to do what I love most: edit, sequence, print, and bind our images into a handmade book - your own photographic florilegium.

It’s a new workshop, and one that sits close to the heart of my own practice. I’ve been making books and photographing plants and gardens for years. This week is a chance to do that together.

Crossing is a book that explores the geography of legacy through an exploration of the islands off the coast of Maine. What do we feel visiting these islands in the off-season, after the summer people have left and the rhythms shift to the shorter days, a time of introspection and reflection?

It is during these months that I went to explore these places, interweaving my own stories with the legacy of generations who have come before. In many ways I am an outsider, who has come to choose her own path to belonging amongst the rocky crags and hardy landscapes of this very special place.

I’ll be talking about this project and others looking at the legacy of geography and how we may go beyond observation in understanding place in my online talk tomorrow on Zoom at 1pm. You can find more about it in the link on my bio if it sounds interesting to you.

I’ll be giving a talk online through on Tuesday May 5th at 1pm, talking about how a sense of place plays such an important role in my work.

I’ll be sharing recent book projects as well as looking at specific series that have really been shaped by an internal as well as an external landscape.
