Horns, sparkles, one very scary mask, and a bucket that is still empty but full of promise.

A change in how I am teaching my beginner photography class.

Last weekend I ran my first Beginner Digital Photography Workshop as a group class. Going forward, I am offering it one-on-one instead. My new job will have me on call some weekends in the future, and I do not want to create any scheduling conflicts with large classes. A private session is much easier to schedule around real life, for both of us. If we ever need to move our day, we just pick a new one.

It is the same class: manual mode, the exposure triangle, and finding good light, practiced on your own camera. About three hours, just you, and possibly my husband, who helps me teach and takes behind the scenes photos.

My first Beginner Digital Photography Workshop is officially in the books!

Yesterday morning a small group of us spent three hours working through the parts of the camera that usually stay a mystery: manual mode, the exposure triangle, and how to find good light instead of fighting bad light. Lots of hands-on practice, lots of good questions, and a few of those moments where it just clicks.

Thank you to everyone who came out and trusted me with your Saturday morning. Teaching this is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and yesterday showed me it is just the start.

Two photos, two kinds of light.

The first was taken in harsh, direct sunlight. Light like that is strong and contrasty. It lands bright where it hits and drops into deep shadow right beside it, and it changes fast as the sun moves.

The second was taken in soft light, the kind you get in open shade. It spreads evenly, so skin looks smooth and there are no strong shadows across the face.

Neither one is a camera setting. It is where you stand. When I get the choice for portraits, I look for open shade: the edge of a building, a tree line, the shady side of a porch. Put your person there, turn them toward the bright open sky, and the light does most of the work for you.

One thing to watch for in any light: sun coming through leaves makes spotty patches. Pretty in person, busy in a photo.

This is the first thing my workshop students learn tomorrow, before we touch a single setting. Light first. Settings second.

Saturday is the day. My first beginner photography workshop is this weekend at the library in Durant, and I get to teach three students how to stop letting their camera make all the decisions. I've been prepping all month and I can't wait.
