Iceland | Columnar Jointing

Definition:
Columnar jointing forms as lava cools and contracts, fracturing into geometric columns as it releases heat.

Not too long ago, I ended up in a conversation with that wandered all over the place and somehow landed on rocks. I’d just gotten back from Iceland and told him about an episode of the podcast that broke down this process.

Rocks choosing order. Nature solving a problem in its own language.

I showed him these photos after. And it hit me that without that random factoid, I probably would’ve just seen a river and a canyon — or rocks on a beach. Learning how the land formed changed the way I stood there. It pulled me backward in time - heat, movement, and the moment this place was still becoming itself.

Same corner gas station.
I’ve been coming through this town for three years, and this spot always feels paused — like time stopped and never rushed back in.

Learned a lesson on this hunt — don’t get distracted by squirrels. There may just be a buck standing on the edge of the woods out front, watching you the whole time.

Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)
Backroads through South Georgia — cotton and peanuts lining either side of the road. These hawks perch along the power lines, patient and focused, waiting for the slightest movement to give away their next meal.

Marbled Orbweaver (Araneus marmoreus)
Spooky Spooder!!
A splash of fall color hanging in the breeze — waiting on whatever flies its way. While actually harmless, they’ve mastered the art of looking like trouble.
