Lucky enough to cross paths with one of my favorite birds on Saturday. Green herons are one of the first birds that really got me hooked. They’re elusive, intelligent, and full of character.

That signature mohawk is a crest they can raise whenever they’re alert or excited, making an already unique bird even more unforgettable.

Little Talbot Island, quiet details in the understory.

The “hole” in the vulture’s face is its nostril structure. It’s part of what gives vultures such a strong sense of smell for locating food, which is unusual among raptors.

The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the largest woodpeckers in North America. Only a few species globally are bigger, and in this region it sits at the top in size, power, and excavation ability.
