I started this painting two years ago and hated it.
As someone who has lived and worked in downtown Denton, I wanted to paint some of my favorite locations and the beauty of downtown. One of my favorite buildings in Downtown Denton is the historic Bank Building (now an office building)
I took a couple different refence photos taken at different times to figure out which lighting to use and filmed a time lapse of me painting it. I hated how it looked. I had every intention of trying to fix it, but eventually it was placed on a shelf and the thought of fixing it forgotten.
That was two years ago.
What changed? This summer I heard about For the Love of Lil'd art auction & fundraiser. I love participating in these auctions where the community purchases a canvas from the organization and paints their own original piece to be included in an auction. This painting has it's own story (for another day!) and it ended up being a breakthrough for me in the way that I paint, as well as an encouragement for me to continue. It sold with the highest bid of the night at the auction!
At that auction I was encouraged by the incredible to do a whole series of downtown paintings - an idea that I had had two years ago! Then, with the opportunity to be included in the Shop the Gallery in December, I knew it was time.
Not only did I find the motivation to finish the painting that I hated, I had the opportunity to work on the collection that had been lingering in the back of my mind for years. What I painted became my best collection of paintings to date.
And the painting I hated for two years...
I love it.
