Earlier this month I got back from a trip to the nation’s capital.
I had never actually seen the cherry blossoms at peak bloom before, and so I'm glad I got to finally scratch that off my travel bucket list, especially since the majority of the Tidal Basin will soon be undergoing some pretty significant construction that will make this slice of the National Mall a much less picturesque place to be for the next few years.
Over the next several months, about 300 trees will be removed from the area to make way for a three-year-long revitalization of the Tidal Basin seawalls, which have experienced considerable decay in recent years.
Happily, thanks to a surprise gift from the Japanese government, all of these trees will eventually be replanted, and I’m sure the area will eventually be even prettier with the addition of a non-crumbling seawall 3+ years from now.
Still, that’s three years of construction fencing, big trucks and neon vests making one of DC’s prettiest spots…considerably less so. Glad I got to see it before all that took place.
P.S. All of these photos and more have been added to my online gallery. Check it out at the link below!
