.modeling on film

Specifically Kodak Gold 200 shot on a Canon F-1. A camera witch, quite frankly, still needs to be sent in for servicing. Despite these being my first attempt at portraits on film, I'm happy with how they turned out.

It's funny, you can know the technical side of something so well, but for me dealing with the nuances of film is definitely a new adventure. But that's one of the reasons why I'm so interested in it.

When you want your portrait to feel like something out of a magazine, I'll be waiting. By the way this was not a planned portrait either. These were guests at a wedding that I sat in front of a window. They put their trust in me, I hope you'll do the same.

And no this did not require a ton of editing, filters, or lighting masks. It just took knowing where to put them. And knowing how to work with that.

Can't wait to see how they turn out. And how badly I messed up forgetting to have like 4 of them hand checked through TSA 🙃

If I'm being honest, Bella's senior photos are the some of the photos I've been looking forward to reposting ever since I started to redo my portfolio. My work up to this point has always felt reactionary: how do I want to edit THIS photo, THIS session. I would try things, maybe color grading one time or a different look another.

But these portraits prove to me that you don't need crazy editing to make a gorgeous photo. Simplicity is often times more important. And I think that's what I've tried to focus on with my updated work. Letting a consistent, simple, clean look take point so that each portrait can shine in its own unique way, while still being part of a consistent body of work.

And let's be honest the lighting we got during this moment in the session was absolutely to die for 🫠🤩

What can I say but that portraits can be so similar and yet so different at the same time.

Why? Because there's so much for people on both sides of the camera to interpret. There's also expectations you may have depending on who is in the picture, what the represent, etc. Two people in the same pose or environment can take on different meanings in the mind of the viewer base on assumptions, biases, or expectations.

As a viewer, I might assume portraits of a contestant for Miss Colorado would have portraits that are manicured, flawless, and pristine. But as a photographer working with a contestant, instead I wanted to show the human side. I wanted the viewer to look at these images and see someone who was confident, fun, strong, and approachable. And REAL.

Ask past me what an environmental portrait of a pageant contestant might look like, I might say airbrushed and manicured to death. But you don't have to ask now me what I think they should look like, because I can show you instead. And they look like this.

Now of course this was a collaboration. I do not simply impose my view onto this session. Clearly I want to ensure that my work reflects what my client wants. Which is why I loved working with , because she was just as happy with what came out of this as I was. And I can't wait to work with her again!

These two poses have become my favorite during sessions for clients with long enough hair. Here's what they are and why:

The first one involves flipping the hair over to one side, tipping the head, and giving the camera a little side eye. I LOVE this one. The flip not only makes the hair look dynamic, it frames the face beautifully when combined with the head tip. Move in close, and the focus is on the eyes. Ugh, so good. The trick is to not overthink the flip. You don't REALLY want ALL of it flipped over.

The second, with our without the flip from the first, is to reach back and pull pull most of the hair gently along the neck and jaw line. This adds some shape to the face and gives the person something more to do than just stand there. The trick again is to not overthink it. You'll lose some of the hair as you go, just leave it! It'll bounce back where it wants to be.

While this may not work for super short hair, I'm looking forward to finding out what does! Until then, you can bet I will keep doing these two looks during my sessions.

Which is your favorite of the two?

"I don't know how to pose"
"I don't really take any pictures"
"I don't feel comfortable in front of the camera"

I've been making portraits with people for a long time. And guess what? MOST OF THEM are not models. Most people spend almost no time in front of a camera. And most are definitely not comfortable in front of one.

That's why time and time again, people come to me. Posing is so much more than "stand this way." It's about how YOU look, and how comfortable you feel. It's about how the light falls on you. It's not just stepping through a list because someone else posed like that on IG.

Also shoutout to Trang who was absolute 🔥 with this outfit during her session. It's always fun working with another photographer who wants to get in front of the camera.

Working with .modeling on this shoot at the , it was a beautiful day with a VERY chilly breeze. But you wouldn't know it just looking at these! What an amazing talent!

#1 is my absolute favorite from this session, but they're all amazing 🤩. Which one is your favorite?
