Most of our mothers have no photographs of themselves pregnant.

Not one. That generation did not document it, and by the time anyone thought to ask, the moment was decades gone.

Your daughter will not have that problem. She is going to stand in front of a framed portrait of you at 32 weeks, probably in her own thirties, possibly pregnant herself, and understand something about where she came from that no story could tell her.

Pregnancy is brief and unrepeatable. The photographs are not.

Colorado's aspens do not wait for your schedule.

High country color usually peaks somewhere between September 18th and the end of the month. Kebler Pass, Independence Pass, the stretch above Highway 119. Then it drops elevation through the first two weeks of October, and the Front Range foothills change last.

That is roughly a three week window for the gold you have been picturing.

I watch it every year because I grew up here, and I have learned the hard way that "next weekend" is often too late.

Every one of them is somebody I've photographed, met in person, or worked alongside. Nobody bought a slot.

Two things about the next eight weeks, since it's the real reason I spent the weekend on this.

The aspens are already popping off. This stretch is the best outdoor light this state hands anybody all year. If you're due in November or December you're sitting in the 30 to 36 week range right now. This is your season and it is short!

The one nobody puts on a registry.
samanthaawalt is a licensed psychologist and owns Althought Therapy in Lakewood. I photographed her maternity session in 2024 and she wrote a piece for my blog the year after, so she's been in this orbit longer than almost anyone else on this list.

Her description of the her work: "We specialize in supporting pregnant and postpartum mothers through the emotional transitions of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood, while also providing deeply relational, person-centered care for anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, and significant life transitions."

My angle on why a therapist belongs in a photography feed. A lot of what happens in my studio is a woman looking at herself for the first time in months and not flinching. That's a very small version of something Samantha does the long way, with actual training behind it. I get an hour. She gets the real work.

I photographed Sydney in the spring. That's her three-month-old now.

is the largest in-home prenatal and postpartum pelvic floor therapy practice in Denver. She started it because taking care of yourself during pregnancy and after it is genuinely hard, and because no mother should have to weigh her baby's needs against her own. What she's after, in her words, is a pain free pregnancy, a confident birth, and a supported postpartum. She calls it pouring from a full cup.

In-home is the part I'd underline. The appointment comes to your living room instead of you driving to a clinic at 36 weeks, or with a newborn in the back seat.
