Ptarmigan work their way down a high-altitude slope. Well, this was a first for me. While I have seen these birds before in fleeting moments, I have never been able to get pics of them. So, let’s call it ! 😉 The white-tailed ptarmigan are cool, color-changing birds. In their summer plumage, seen here, they blend in perfectly with the rocky landscapes they call home. In the winter, they will turn all white, camouflaged in the snow.

Trio of moose bulls gather to discuss the upcoming rut. Well, I don’t know what they were talking about – or if they were really even ‘talking’ – but it was fun to see this th*****me together. At a few points on the morning this was taken there was some light sparring, signaling that the coming battles are not too far off. Hope you have a fantastic, !

Sunrise lit clouds over Thorodin Mountain. Running a bit behind, I couldn’t make it to my preferred sunrise spot in Golden Gate Canyon State Park last Saturday. Mother Nature helped me out though by coloring the clouds above in a beautiful shades of orange punctuated by a blue background.

Not having much luck fishing, young bear contemplates having duck for breakfast. This poor bear was just not having any luck. The bears around it were eating well and the anglers were reeling in the salmon. It, however, was struggling to catch anything. The bear did change targets briefly and bounded after the ducks (a bit of action I missed unfortunately). Its luck did not improve, however, and it came up empty.

“Who ordered lunch and didn’t invite me?” This young bald eagle seems quite indignant that other eagles were partaking in a feast without it. Taken in Alaska in the Redoubt Bay Critical Habitat Area, some anglers were cleaning their fish and discarding the remnants overboard. That drew the attention of a dozen bald eagles looking for an easy meal. Hey, as regal as they are, they are not above scavenging. I loved how upset this one looked as it sought to join the feast.

Hummingbird keeps watch in the forest. A very pretty lady from some time in Colorado State Forest State Park last month. I’m not sure if this is a rufous or broad-tailed hummingbird but either way, she looked pretty danged good. She was guarding our feeder, doing her best to keep the bounty to herself, and in doing so, gave me this nice, pleasing portrait. I haven’t had much luck at all with these little summer visitors this year. While we have a few that visit our yard, they seem to make themselves scarce when I show up. Haha.

Goldfinch gets picky about which seed it wants. Kind of a fun pic of this very colorful bird. Unlike most birds on the plains, the male goldfinch really stands out with that bright yellow plumage. My friend and I recently happened across this guy as he worked his way through a stand of wild sunflowers, gorging himself on the contents.

Mountain goat nanny and kid on top the world. Maybe not as high as some other places but at 14,130 feet, it is a good ways up there. Normally I wouldn’t care for a shot with the ‘hand of man’ but I have come to really like this capture. The pair had just reached the upper parking lot and paused briefly, checking out the goofy guy all bundled up against the wind. In the background, you can see the mountains in the distance giving you an idea of the altitude.

Moose keeps close watch when grazing. This handsome fellow wasn’t going to let me interrupt his breakfast, but he was clearly keenly aware that I was there. The early morning filtered sunlight was perfect and gave a night catchlight in his eye. A bonus one for in addition to the one I shared this morning.
