I’ve been watching this spot, waiting for the leaves to change. I photographed this session 2 weeks ago with hints of yellow.

Chasing fall colors is the unspoken legwork of portrait and lifestyle photographers. Sure, we can go up into the mountains, but not every client wants that, especially with the crowds on and off the road.
Every fall, so much leg work goes into finding spots that are within a certain distance, accessibility, and hopefully timing and weather all coming together perfectly. We’ll see how this shapes up for these close to town fall sessions I have coming up.

Philip + Joslyn
Quiet mornings as the sun peaks above the surrounding mountains always feel so special

I was so happy when Philip and Joslyn said they were up for heading up in the mountains for sunrise while I was on my way to Steamboat for an ultramarathon (Run Rabbit Run 100)
It was a perfect morning for a photo session

It feels like I’m always having conversations with families about how quickly time passes and how rapidly children grow into adults.
Growing children aside, I’ve never had a conversation with anyone who said they regret taking photos.
Even if you aren’t booking sessions, take the cell phone pics and videos so you have something to look back on to enhance the memories next month, next year, or in the next season of life.

Black and white hits differently.

I’m often torn between color vs black and white. They both have strengths in their own way, but sometimes the simplicity of a black and white photo just hits so differently.

I’m always down for a grand mountain adventure at the crack of dawn, as long as there’s an expectation of lots of smiles and laughter mixed into the day even if it’s a type 2 fun kind of day

I am so excited to photograph Tom and Laura’s Buena Vista wedding on the Arkansas river this July

I am often asked what my favorite venue is. I’ve photographed weddings in so many venues and so many amazing outdoor places, from mountain tops to back yards.
To be honest, it isn’t just the space that makes a venue great or makes it my favorite. It goes so much farther and deeper than the physical space.
It’s the energy and emotions that the couple and their friends and family bring into it. It’s the memories they make there and the memories I and everyone attending the wedding leave with. That’s what makes a venue stand out in my mind as a favorite.

Don’t stress over the space, just bring your love and your crew and go make some core memories in your venue/backyard/open field/whatever spot you want to call yours

B&W vs color. Sometimes black and white just hits in a different way.

I took these photos on New Year’s Day at sunrise when there was a snowy have over the peaks as the alpenglow hit, the colors and illumination looked unreal, yet I still prefer it in black and white

The first part of Matt and Savanna’s New Year’s Day sunrise adventure on their wedding day began with us meeting up at 5am to head to the trailhead.

It was cold. It was windy. But we were all prepared and up for the adventure.

Often when couples want me to photograph an adventure, whether it’s for an elopement, engagement, family, or purely adventure photos, I’m always trying to gauge if they know what they’re getting into, if they’re prepared and experienced, and if they’re really up for it. Fortunately, Matt and Savanna are well versed in trekking through less than ideal conditions for a great adventure.

We had to shift gears a little and alter our destination slightly as the wind hit well over 30mph, but we found some protection in the trees and behind a hill where we enjoyed a stunning sunrise. The way the alpenglow hit the peaks with the snowy haze was absolutely incredible!

In the mountains, the forecast is often limited or less than accurate. The weather can also change abruptly, but with proper gear, flexibility and willingness to adjust plans accordingly you can still have an amazing time!

I typically deliver about 12 sneak peek photos. Well, I just delivered 40 because I couldn’t resist.

These are just a few from 1 small part of Matt and Savanna’s sunrise adventure on New Year’s Day, to celebrate their elopement taking place later in the day.

No matter what your wedding plans are, include some details that are just for the two of you, even if that means getting up before sunrise to go on an adventure together to start your day, or year in this case.

We started the day trekking through the snow before sunrise, but ended the day in their restored VW, Lenny has been passed down and around Savanna’s family, starting with her grandpa. Note her jacket, which also belonged to her grandma

The perfect breaks in the early winter storm gave Ian + Ana a stunning wedding day!

The forecast looked questionable leading up to their mountain wedding. We had a plan A, B and C but decided we would make the final call in the moment.
The rain came and went and came again, but it all made for the perfect moody mountain setting. The clouds broke, giving us views of Mount Princeton came with pops of yellow aspen, which was all we hoped for.
