Last week, and I spent 3 days backpacking nearly 40 miles through the Lost Creek Wilderness. As many backpacking trips are, this trip was contrasted by beauty and challenge. On one hand, we enjoyed breathtaking views, awesome wildlife sightings, deep conversation, and feelings of incredible accomplishment. On the other hand, we endured endless all-day/all-night rainstorms, grueling climbs, two broken water purifiers, one massive hail and lightning storm, and a general ongoing sogginess.
Backpacking trips have always acted as great teachers for me. My biggest lesson? Surrendering to what is. Is it worth getting frustrated about weather I can’t change? Or could I use that energy to enjoy the epically lush environment created by said rain? Sometimes it’s hard, but I choose the latter
So the next time life throws you a hail and lightning storm, I recommend doing what we did: hunker down under a tree, cook oatmeal, and laugh at the absurdity of your situation 😊.
