Today was one of those days where you just have to trust your gear and your gut. Despite the heavy snowfall and a very wet camera lens, I managed to catch this bison mid-lick. It was a beautiful, quiet moment in the middle of a very windy storm.

This Double-crested Cormorant is looking like a legendary creature rising from the depths! Between those turquoise eyes and the intense, water-slicked expression, it looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie rather than a local lake 😂

Talk about a post-meal shake! Managed to catch this Heron flinging water after swallowing a fish and getting a drink. If you look closely, you can see the nictitating membrane closed over the eye for protection. What a cool moment to witness!

Often heard but rarely seen, the Eastern Screech-Owl is North America's most versatile owl, hunting everything from typical mice to surprising snacks like tadpoles, fish, and even earthworms right here in Colorado!

I've been waiting to cross this one off my list for a while now (American avocet). Not only are they stunning with those blue shanks and rusty summer colors, but I learned something fascinating about how they eat.

Instead of just pecking, they use a behavior called scything. They put their slightly open bill into shallow water and sweep it from side to side in a wide arc. It stirs up tiny aquatic treats and they catch them in one motion—it's like they're using a built-in metal detector for snacks!

Great blue herons almost always swallow their prey headfirst. They will patiently juggle a fish in their beak to position it just right before gulping it down whole. This clever strategy ensures that any sharp fins or spines on the fish collapse backward smoothly against its body, preventing them from getting painfully stuck or tearing the heron's throat.

While I’m sure most of you recognize this bird, it’s crazy seeing such a close-up of a face that looks like it's straight out of Avatar because of those incredible 'structural' blue tones—a color created by light scattering off collagen fibers in his skin that can shift in seconds depending on his mood!

There is nothing quite like the intense, focused gaze of a bald eagle. That famous piercing stare isn't just an expression; it is a direct result of their specialized anatomy. While bald eagles don’t actually have eyelashes, they have a heavy, bony shelf above their eyes called the supraorbital ridge. This ridge acts like a built-in sun visor, shielding their eyes from glare and protecting them from brush while they hunt.

To keep their vision crystal clear, they also use a translucent third eyelid called a nictitating membrane. This membrane sweeps across the eye horizontally like a windshield wiper to keep it moist and free of debris without ever blocking their sight. Together, these features give the eagle its legendary, unwavering focus.

It was so awesome to see this young brancher peeking out from the safety of its parent, a bird nicknamed the "tiger of the sky" because of its fierce hunting skills; and since it has such a poor sense of smell, it is one of the only regular predators of skunks!
