The sun burned through the fog off the Skunk River, lifting off the fields and settling in the valley. The bus stopped where it had stopped for my father, and where it had stopped for me. My daughters climbed the steps, the third generation on this family homestead.

I spent 17 years away, in Des Moines, and 3 in LA shooting high fashion. This was an overdue migration, I felt in my heart. Now we are back where the timber meets the fields and the water flows to the Mississippi. They are farm kids now.

"Can we get more animals, Dad?" You bet.

That golden hour sun filtering through the trees, the breeze rolling through the timber, and pure farm life nostalgia. Day two with the new kittens, kicking back in the hammock by the Skunk River, and four-wheeler rides with Dad when he needed a break and just laid back on the machine.

Between the deep shade by the river, the kids soaking up every minute with the new farm crew, and simple days out in the woods, these are the moments that make it all worthwhile.

My daughters went over to the neighbors to see the kittens, and we got coerced into taking them home lol. Now we have two new animals on the farm.

After two decades behind the lens, it is easy to feel like you have seen it all, especially in an era where everyone with a smartphone calls themselves a photographer. It is easy to loose your passion for the art of it all. But then something happens right in your own backyard that completely rewrites the script. Watching my kids experience this kind of pure, unfiltered joy brought a totally fresh perspective to my viewfinder. It completely breathes new life into the art, and seeing through their eyes made photography feel entirely new again after twenty years.
