When Ilene first contacted me about her photo session, she wasn't sure if she was going to include the cats in the photos or just bring Bello the cockatiel. She wasn't sure that the cats would cooperate and that we would get any good photos. I assured her that I had some tricks up my sleeve and that we would. I think mission accomplished!

Today is World Pet Memorial Day.

I've been thinking about Kera a lot today, about all the things I miss about her. Not the big moments, the little things that made her special. How she would "yell" at me if I was even five minutes late with her dinner or her walk. How she would scratch her b***y on the grape vines every time she went outside. How she would hide in my closet whenever I would cook because I once, years ago, burnt a pan of green beans. What I miss most of all is how she made me laugh, every single day and her hugs. They were the best.

After I lost her, I found myself writing down those memories because I was afraid of forgetting them. That letter eventually became the inspiration for my *Letters to My Dog* portrait experience.

If you've lost a beloved pet, I hope you'll take a moment today to think about the things that made them uniquely them.

You don't have to wait until your dog is old to know they're your heart dog.

Sometimes you know the moment they come home.

Sometimes it's the way they follow you from room to room.

One of the reasons I created *Letters to My Dog* is because I learned that tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

Not when they're 14.
Not when they're 7.
Not even when they seem perfectly healthy.

A question I've been thinking about lately...

One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that we always think we have more time.

More time for the photos.
More time for the adventures.
More time to tell them how much they mean to us.

When Kera passed away unexpectedly last November, I found myself holding on to the little things—the memories, the routines, the moments that once felt ordinary and suddenly became priceless.

It's a reminder I carry with me every day now:

Don't wait.

Don't wait for the perfect time.
Don't wait until life slows down.
Don't wait until they're older.

Celebrate them now.

Photograph them now.

Love them now.

Because the things that feel ordinary today may someday become the things you treasure most. 🤍
