Did you know this art deco building helped launch Detroit techno?

The Penobscot Building was built by William Murphy in 1928, and named for the Maine river where his father first cut timber. After making a fortune in Michigan pine, Murphy turned his lumber wealth to auto production. He financed Henry Ford's first company in 1899. Ford walked out in 1902, and Murphy then founded Cadillac.

The river is named for the Penobscot Nation of Maine. Corrado Parducci carved a chief in a Plains headdress over the door.

In the 1980s, Detroit techno grew up here, with pioneering DJ the Electrifying Mojo landing his mothership every night at 10.

At 18 years old, Barbra Streisand sang at the building's Caucus Club, four shows a night.

What do the ceilings of the Fisher Building mean?

In 1927, the architect Albert Kahn was asked to build the "most beautiful commercial structure in the world."

Detroit's Fisher Building would be a sweeping artistic statement.

Kahn commissioned the visionary Hungarian painter Géza Maróti to design a set of frescoes depicting the progress of human art, culture, science and technology in the 20th century.

Maróti's frescoes elevate above all music, poetry and religion. They depict, at the apex of the building, muses and cherubs surrounded by the tree of life: the central image in Hungarian myth.

Surrounding them are eagles, symbolizing the economic basis of these artistic accomplishments: the arches intermix the virtues of peace, art, justice and knowledge with the useful trades, agriculture, navigation and other industries.

Its arch quotes Alexander Pope's prologue to Addison's Cato (1713) — the play staged by George Washington as the Continental troops shivered in Valley Forge at the most desperate stage of the American Revolutionary War.

The quote reads:

"To wake the soul by tender strokes of art, to raise the genius and to mend the heart"

Did you know Detroit's "last vacant high-rise" is being restored?

The Lee Plaza was a symbol of Detroit's "Roaring '20s." Its ballroom piano was one of the most famous scenes of abandoned Detroit.

When it opened in 1927, its builder, Ralph T. Lee, called it "the finest thing of its kind in America." It had hand-painted ceilings by Corrado Parducci.

Its builder went bankrupt in the Great Depression.

The Lee Plaza was subjected to organized looting. More than 50 lion heads were stripped from the facade. Six turned up on luxury condos in Chicago. No one was ever convicted. The scrappers even stripped the copper roof.

Now a $60 million restoration is underway — and the stolen lions are being re-created.

Did you know that the Detroit Symphony Orchestra offers free instruments to every student in Detroit who wants to learn how to play?

The program is called Detroit Harmony and it has helped hundreds of Detroit students become musicians.

We had the honor of photographing Detroit Harmony students after their performance on May 30.

These young people are genuine artists, and they gave original, moving performances. It’s amazing to see their growth from just one year ago.

Detroit’s musical future is in very good hands.

Why did Detroit’s historic art club choose the scarab as its symbol?
The Scarab Club constructed a new building in 1928 right next to the Detroit Institute of Arts to accommodate “Detroit’s sole organization whose membership is composed of artists.”
Founded in 1907, the club said its mission was “to stimulate and guide toward practical expression the artistic sense of the people of Detroit; to advance the knowledge and love of the fine arts in every possible manner.”
The Michigan Historical Marker at the door reads: “The scarab, an Egyptian symbol of rebirth, represents the club’s commitment to the perpetual renewal of the arts in Detroit.”
The Arts and Crafts architect Buck Stratton designed the Pewabic medallion over the entrance. His wife Mary Chase Stratton, the founder of Pewabic Pottery, fired it herself.
Inside, the second-floor lounge has wooden ceiling beams that over 200 visiting artists have signed since 1928. Painter Diego Rivera signed in 1932 while working on the Detroit Industry Murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts — the iconic depiction of Detroit in the visual arts.
The great writer John Dos Passos, who prominently featured Detroit in his USA Trilogy and called it “the Yukon of the sweated workers of the world,” signed below Rivera.
Hour Detroit just named it Detroit’s Best Gallery. The building turns 100 in 2028.
Let’s wish the Scarab Club another hundred years.
