Writer and scientist Rachel Carson died on April 14, 1964, just two years after her book "Silent Spring" became an immediate bestseller. While her writing had thrust Carson in the national spotlight, she had been privately battling cancer for years.
"Somehow I have no wish to read of my ailments in literary gossip columns," the ultra-private Carson told a friend at the time. "Too much comfort to the chemical companies!"
