Heather Jowett

Heather Jowett Michigan documentary wedding photographer with a dash of awesome. Serving Southeast Michigan, and j Hi there! I’m Heather. I’d rather wear dresses than pants.

Here’s the gist of what you need to know about me: I am a goof. I love my job. I don’t think there’s a problem that a cup of chai tea won’t solve. I live in an old house with a leaky roof. I’m a nerd, and if you don’t believe me, I have the Harry Potter tattoo to prove it. I photograph weddings. I do what I do for love, and the love of it. People over everything.

All afternoon the room where Julz and her bridesmaids were getting ready was filled with noise: nervous giggles, squeals, dancing, singing, noise. At one point I decided to head upstairs to grab some water and when I came back down I busied myself photographing details when it hit me. There was no noise. I figured Julz and her bridesmaids had just headed elsewhere but I decided to poke my head into the room just in case and I found this: A bride with seven hands laid on her, seven hands loving her, seven hands quietly speaking words of hope and love and blessing and affirmation into the biggest day of her life so far.

People over everything. F**k the flowers. F**k taking photos of the guest book or the seating chart or the place settings. Find the people. Find them when they’re noisy and singing and dancing, and more importantly, find them when they’re quiet. Find them and point your camera at them. It's that simple.

People over everything. That’s why I do this.

This is just a public service to all my clients: My brain is town between planning Midwest Gathering (less than a month out!) and working for all of you, so if I forget to post your sneak peek until 4 days after I intended to, please forgive me.

Here's a sneak peek I intended to post 4 days ago.

How not to ruin your makeup on your wedding day:

Ruin it. Cry. Don't hold back. Care. Feel feelings. Don't think about your mascara. Think about every moment that brought you to that day. Don't worry if it'll ruin your pictures. It won't. It'll make them beautiful. It'll show you spent you day in the moment. Cry often. Cry whenever you feel like it. Cry.

And always remember to pat the tears away with a handkerchief, not wipe, when you're done.
