Hey fam, it feels a bit out of touch to say happy Friday after such a hard week. I sincerely hope that you’re well and have been able to be gentle with yourselves. Art Friday is back, with a very special Michaela edition. 🙏🏾✨
This week, I had the upreme honor of participating in the Black Magic project by Adam Davis. Davis (b. 1994) is an American Visual Artist, Educator, and Arts Education Advocate born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Black Magic is a collection of tintype portraits made around historically Black cities throughout America that will contribute to the largest contemporary archive of Black American life through tintype photography. This project is a beautiful exploration of Blackness, Queerness, Afrofuturism, and the Art of Magic/Spirituality. Yes, please.
I feel especially grateful to have my image included in this project, knowing what I know about cultural erasure, anti-blackness, and misogynoir. This project feels like the medicine I didn’t know I needed; a kind of archival belonging rooted in love and respect. Through this image, I get to communicate my dignified existence to present and future generations. A complicated/cool ancestor. Through this image, I am reminded of my personal power. What an infinitely wonderful gift.
Many thanks to , DarkRoomDetroit and the folks who held space with me this week. I needed that. If you’re in the Detroit area and identify as Black, head over to to learn how to participate. 🖤

Spot Color Riso (for beginners)
-
In this workshop, participants will learn the basic ideas around spot color vs. CMYK printing and use this knowledge to make a print on a Risograph. Participants are invited to bring a photograph to be reproduced as a print. They will then be lead through the process of creating color separations and proper exporting of files for print. The resulting separations will then be made into 5x7 prints, 50 for each participant.

What is Black Magic?
This project is a community centered effort to reclaim the original form of image making called TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPHY. While traveling to HISTORICALLY BLACK cities around North America, the goal is to make 20,000 tintype portraits of Black Americans to create the LARGEST CONTEMPORARY ARCHIVE OF BLACK AMERICAN PORTRAITS. The themes explored in this body of work include celebrating Blackness, Queerness, & Afrofuturism.
-
Adam Davis will be joining Darkroom Detroit to host a series of events from May 15 -22. Currently he is touring historically black cities within the United States with the ambitious goal to create 20,000 tin types of Black Americans- the largest contemporary archive of Black American portraits.

Exciting news!! Freep Film Festival and Darkroom Detroit are partnering for a special program in conjunction with the Michigan premiere of “Grain.” Link in Bio!!

“Grain” explores the stories of those committed to using film in modern day photography. Whether it’s a fashion house seeking to bring a new edge to their creative work, an amateur perusing eBay for the perfect vintage Polaroid, or an influencer attempting to capture a comforting retro aesthetic on social media, analog photography has piqued the interest of people everywhere. Is this resurgence a backlash against digital photography? Is it just a trend perpetuated by our desire for authenticity in an increasingly superficial world? Or is it something else entirely?

Immediately following the screening at 1:30 p.m. Sat., April 30, at the Michigan Science Center, festivalgoers are encouraged to join Darkroom Detroit and “Grain” filmmakers Alex Contell and Tommaso Sacconi on a photo walk around Midtown Detroit.

In addition, a limited number of attendees will receive a free disposable camera and admission to a photo developing workshop led the next day by Darkroom Detroit.

A select number of photographs made by the participants in the film processing workshop will be published in the Sunday Free Press and on freep.com later in the month of May.
